It should be every year. Part of the reason this layoff is so daunting is because full rigor was left out of the focal process. It's a pay me now or pay me later thing. Best to have an annual purge that is borne of rigor, than to skip over the hard stuff and deal with catastrophe later.

Whether you are self-employed or not, job security doesn't exist. I've lived both lives and fully expect that insecurity to stay with me for a very long time. Block out training time, keep those commitments to yourself, build and sustain your network, and keep the resume updated. It is hard to do that while balancing a full time job and family, but is sure beats feeling a curveball of insecurity when sh-- like this happens. I'm not exactly prepared (clearly preaching to the choir here), but anxiety meds have helped keep me on track to pull my portfolio together while I work on a few back-up plans.
Which reminds me - Intel should have a 'Back-up Plan' course on their learning site. "In case you are impacted, here are things you can do now to cover your ass"
Look at years past, future doesn't look bright. Everyone is dispensable. Pick up a second trade, and always have a back up plan

I believe it will become more commonplace moving forward. How about saving some immediate jobs by first canning that stupid America's Greatest Makers show! Oh, what channel is this on? I nearly forgot. Every critique worth his salt rates this show as a flop. Chalk another failure up for BK's ash heap.
