Nobody's safe...
So let's baseline this... If someone in finance determines that the company is better off without your entire division, then the division is gone, you are gone, nobody will shed a tear.
It doesn't matter how cool your stuff is or how much your boss likes you. None of that matters....
I have seen band 9s, STSMs and DEs get the pink slip along with everyone else when the company decides it doesn't want to be in that line of business anymore. Back to the premise, nobody is safe...
A word of advice: focus on growing your skills and finding work that is interesting to you within your area.
Network with everyone, it sometimes helps...
Don't become bitter and you will be able to find your next gig based on your skills and positive attitude.
We will all get laid off at some point - the only thing you can count on is change.
