That's a lie, people get laid off when earnings are high all the time. Even more so if they are the bottom performers, hell i had someone i know got a bad enough focal to be laid off on the day he received it.
Whether or not how they determine who is a low performer(SSL4/5) is a valid metric or not is another topic.
Well, pick a company that at least pays a severance if that is the ONLY attribute you are weighing! I have heard many a horror story about people in other companies that are let go WITHOUT ANYTHING! At least if you are laid off at Intel, your severance is in the top tier of packages offered in the US.
To another poster's credit, no one individual or company is immune from this process. So you have to ask, do join or not join a company based on one aspect that happens to be a the low point?
Have your friend write down the pros and cons, and let him/her decide for themselves.
The difference is that usually when you get laid off by another company its because earnings or revenues are down and times are hard.
Intel is laying off despite $2B in earnings and growing revs.
Because no other company lays people off? Every day people lose their jobs, deal with it. Your no more likely to be laid of at Intel than any other job, in fact i'd say its the opposite.
