Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Stop with the racism and show some class and self-respect.

I'm a white male, Ph.D, with over 15 years at Intel. Most of my management have been Indian. My best managers were Indian. Many of my friends are Indian and other races. I've enjoyed the incredible diversity of people I've had the opportunity to meet and work with over my years here. There is so much to experience from other cultures. Yet, at the same time, so many commonalities.

It's saddening to see so many post revert to racism and bigotry. We are all trying to make in a life in a competitive environment. There will always be nepotism, good'ol boys clubs, and the such. I've heard people complain about the Mormon club, the Arab club, the Jewish club, even other Indians complaining about other Indian clubs from different regions or casts. It never stops. But we are all people, with families, significant others, kids, aging parents... you name it. We're not all that different!

It's a numbers game. The fact is there are huge waves of highly educated, skilled, driven foreigners who want jobs in the US. I've interviewed dozens of candidates over my tenure at Intel, and I can count on one hand how many of them were American caucasian. Few meet our high bar which entails advanced degrees with stellar GPA's. And guess what: those highly educated foreigners will live in your neighborhood and raise their children to also be high-achievers. Those children are Americans.

So grow up. Business is ugly, especially these days. And yes, Intel's management really screwed up. It doesn't matter what race/gender you are, if you are making your manager more successful, you will be more successful. You might be the victim of poor management, unforeseen circumstance, etc., but you may be surprised to find out that it's your own laziness.

This layoff might be the best thing to happen to you. It causes change you wouldn't normally want. And with that change is the opportunity to make things better.

I'm on the chopping block, too. I'm divorced with young kids. There are no other gigs in Oregon so I'll be forced to move away from my children. It sucks, but we need to make the best of what challenges life throws at us. Be positive. Be strong. Help each other regardless of skin color.

It's hard to imagine that there are so many people here who have very low critical thinking and survived at Intel till now.

Just because you stop hiring H1bs do you think you can keep the jobs ?

Tell that to all the HP employees and see what they say.

Once the technology matures the jobs are gone anyway. If not H1b who stay here and pay taxes ,it will just move to China. Would you rather have the jobs in US or would you want it in mediatek China?

h1bs are one of the most productive people in US.how many h1bs do you know who take wellfare. Do drugs , not pay taxes produce uncated Kids , increase crime or are uneducated ?

It is not racism to call out deceptive practices. It is very blatant what intel is doing. You are in denial if cant see it. Indians are like everyone else, there are some outstanding, some OK, and some slackers. Indians are not the problem, it is management direction, this thing called leadership or lack of it that is the problem. And Indians are NOT paid less than other employees at the same level at intel in the US. They get paid the same as other new hires, I know this because I manage several Indians and know what they and others on my team make. I also know that when I am given candidates to interview, in the last two/three years, 85-90% are Indian or foreign born. I find it impossible to believe that is representative of the population of college graduates. Almost always if I do get a non Indian candidate they turn down the job because they get better offers elsewhere. So we (intel) have not been hiring the cream of the crop. If i get a resume directly, I must send it to HR before I can schedule an interview and very few with non Indian names EVER come back to me.

I believe that in a few years those Indians will be be the ones crying and whinning when they get cut due to whim of management or age to the point that newly minted Indian grads take their jobs.

I am retiring next week and I will no longer be a part of this charade at intel

The Indians have a country. The Jews didn't have one, and I would hardly compare Israel with India.

Anyone who shrugs off the H1B problem is in major DENIAL. "White" men are committing suicide because they aren't able to find jobs to feed their families. It's downright TRAGIC. Be strong and put your hope in God.

ID: @H7nzZhB-lry is absolutely spot on. Unfortunately, America became victim to the "gaming" of the tech job industry over the past many years and, although many cultures have jumped in on those coattails, the East Indians are the primary players. I have witnessed first hand, the deceptive practices in obtaining college degrees through less desired means, interviews that are conducted by phone with relatives that pretend to be the named interviewee, only to help a relative obtain employment. E-verify in the State of Nevada was implemented on the back of a very deceptive contract lead by an East Indian manager of a top-five consulting firm that went behind the contract and State's back and brought in illegal family members to work on site, as well as billing for family members that were not even working on the project or approved to work in this country. Then pile on the fact, this culture works for pennies on the $$, which is what entices businesses in this country to hire, or offshore, only hurting the American workers chances of getting employment. Of course an American worker can take a job for much less money, but then welcome to a third world way of living. And that is not what we should be allowing in this country. This statement above speaks nothing personal or negative against a person or individual of that culture. I am speaking of a much bigger problem that needs to be addressed at the highest level. I personally know a lot of great East Indian workers that work their butts off, very nice and friendly.

I too once joined this company after graduating from a university@Ohio - Intel filed a H1B and then permanent residency. Intel did not pay me less but it hired me based on technical skill-set requirements. Quit moaning and work harder and climb the skill set ladder. Competition worldwide is relentless and if you expect to perpetually draw a pay check without expanding your skill-set - prepare to be overrun by the Gen X or the Millennials.

"I am not against Indian people, there are really brilliant indian engineers in Intel. However, I also find some not so good Indian engineers tend to be very greedy and cunning."

You can say this ABOUT ANYBODY.

The fact is that Americans are being replaced by cheaper labor with H1B visas. They are willing to work for much lower wages, because it is still a lot better than what they were paid in their home country. Look at the changing demographics of engineering and technology companies in the US. Many of them don't even have degrees from US universities.

I am not against Indian people, there are really brilliant indian engineers in Intel. However, I also find some not so good Indian engineers tend to be very greedy and cunning. They show obedient and smooth talking side to their managers and backstab more hard working and diligent team mates at the same time in order to advance. If one team got one of such Indian, the team is eventually ruined because good people will all leave and same type of Indian guys will join due to favoritism. I am not saying these kind of things only occur among Indians, but it does happen more often compared to other ethnic groups. The reason is because first they are the only H1Bs who don't have language barrier, second they owns the largest H1B quota (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-08-20/india-nabs-nearly-two-thirds-of-u-s-h-1b-visas.html), third most of them were not educated about favoritism, racism when they grow up in their own country.

to the OP.. This is not about race nor about diminishing anyone's success .. They could be Indian, Chinese, or Martians from all I care. This is about displacing US workers from US jobs on US soil. I have no issues with people trying to be the best they can and to provide the best for them and their families and I care less were they came from but when that success comes at the expense of me , my family , and my fellow american's citizens then we need to have a fare and reality discussion and if you are not willing to have that conversation then move on but don't be calling people racist for speaking out their minds especially when real people are getting hurt loosing everything they have been working for many years and affected by this situation and the reality is that ~15K H-1B's have been hired by Intel since 2000 and around ~150K just in 2016 by other companies in the US.

To tell me that there are no US citizens capable of filling out the jobs we have is ridiculous so this has to do more with greed and with what our high management and investor$$$ are looking for more than anything. Sure business is business but there is also loyalty and patriotism so please don't be selling your "new world order" here..

I am very happy that you have had such great relationship with co-workers that happens to be H-1b's as we all had also share similar experiences both good and bad as we are all humans and not perfect but don't come here waiving your phd on people faces thinking that you are better and more rightful than others because the only racist right now is you with your condescending tone.

I am an American and a proud patriot veteran not only at Intel but also as a veteran of the armed forces than have fight for this country so you and your family can enjoy freedom and I call it as I see it so if we are loosing our jobs to foreigners in our own soil then there is something wrong and we need to fix it and figure out why we can not get more US citizens on this positions rather than having to import so many H-1B's .. peace...

I interviewed 3 Caucasian RCGs last hear and offered jobs to 2 of them as we had two openings. Both rejected the offer saying it was low, I then contacted the 3rd candidate offering him the job and he rejected saying it was low pay and they he had another offer from another company in California. I ended up hiring two girls because of diversity one Indian and one Chinese. By the way, white manager here

America has very happy problem. Except for U.S. any countries welcome to high educated foreign workers, but U.S. invented H-1B lottery. All countries suffer from brain drain, but U.S. suffer from brain influx. What a joke.

It is true that Intel and other corporations like them hire many employees on H1-B visa. But they give them lower salary than US citizen. So its all business decisions. At the end of the day these big corporations do not care about the hardworking employees. They'll change things any way that is profitable to them.

I don't think any favoritism is given to any particular race. Intel has certain requirements when hiring people be it education or skill set. I believe Asians either have a PHD or Masters and join as RCGs in the company. The government has a rule towards these large companies that if they hire non residents they have to file working visas inorder to continue using them as workers in usa. If Intel wanted to cut costs they should reduce sponsoring visas. But they believe it is a small price to pay for such well qualified/ educated engineers. The great thing about America is everyone is given an opportunity, and if you deserve it you will get it. But don't expect to get things the easy way like the Arabs do in middle East.

Still amazed that people believe that facts can be racist.

Agree that the tone here can be better, but valid points are being made

It is not the fault of the H1B Visa employee from India, it is the fault of your US gubmint caving into big business lobbyists, and it is also your fault for thumbing your nose at unionization in the US all along. No one should be shocked at what is happening, it is either the existence you wanted or the existence you ignored.

All I can say is these huge waves of highly educated, skilled, driven foreigners who want jobs in the US are making job searching a lot harder for an average american citizen who are new graduates (especially those with a B.S) the past few years for any organization.

good to see you have such energy to start your new job search. It isn't fun to have to look for another job because you weren't part of your manager's club. At least you seem to imply that your current situation is of your own making, because of your "lazyness". Many other people have received ISPs not because they were lazy but because they were targeted as not being part of the correct "club".
