with 12000 people coming out, I'm worried sick that finding a new job might take way too long. what do you guys think?

Jobs are there to try and win if you move to the Bay Area. Job scenario in Sacramento sucks (in spite of HP and a few other firms) for those let go from Folsom. I guess the same for those in Portland, with Intel being the biggest employer. Situation should be better in Chandler and Austin where choices abound. The best deals are in San Jose, CA, but then the financials and what the moolah can get you there is a big let down. And if you established roots, family, a house etc. where you got fired, all the more headache moving to SJ.
Finding a job is going be especially difficult after your CEO was on live TV saying he going to layoff under performing employees. you may want to leave Intel out of your resume this round. Lol.
Trolls have taken over
It's not HB1, it's H1B visa. You are mixing it with L1 visa- which is the one where you train your replacement is L1 where a foreign worker comes in and takes over your role.
If you can't state your facts, how do you expect to bring change ?
I've met some dumb people on H1B'! So I think it has to do with cheap labor and short cycles. Ask Murthy.
For people that think H1B's are taking their job, why do you think that would be? Is it because they're more skilled or they're cheaper? If they're more skilled, then isn't the onus on you to improve your skillset? If they're cheaper(it's not true, but let's suppose it is), then why don't you just accept the same pay so that a company has no reason to hire them over you? If they can accept lower pay and make a living in the US, why can't everyone else? Would you rather be unemployed because you feel you're worth more, or be employed under market rate? H1B is not the problem.
For people who stay over 10 years, it is difficult to find a similar job - function, pay, benefit...etc. It is not the case for low grade level engineers, one of my friends got the job and is fighting for VSP opportunity.
On average for every $10K in salary you make per year expect to take a month to find a new position. So if you make $100K you'll take 10 months or so. Make sure you write your congressman and senator to complain about the H1 situation.

The average time for unemployed finding a new job has been around 5-6 months prior to this huge layoff saturating the market. It will definitely impact it. I would highly recommend jumping into the contractor scene. Believe it or not, contractors are actually considered much more valuable out in the real world, than how low regard Intel shows for Contingent Workers. You can actually test drive a new employer this way, getting much higher rate of pay, and can still get W2 status with benefits from recruiting firm. Learn how to work with recruiters and you can negotiate great packages. Rates vary depending on what your skills are. Project Managers can make 75-95 $ per hour W2 depending on your State. Some state entities pay less like 50-60 per hour. But there are many tech jobs out there that are quick turnaround while you seek long term employment as an FTE. The best part about being a contractor is no more performance reviews. You are treated like a consultant, there to provide a service. Much more respected than the way Intel treats their contractors
I've been out 2 years. Comparable jobs have been difficult to find. I don't know how many times I have been told I am overqualified.
Seriously? You're obviously not thinking straight. For one, 12K aren't going to be looking for a job! Even if they were it wouldn't be the same job! Even if they were it wouldn't be at the same city/state/country!!!! Lastly, not everyone in that 12K number is considering going back to work! Some of us waited patiently for a package to take to get out of there.

12000 only on Intel this year... you need also to include 5000 from Qualcomm and other from broadcom.
