Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Is QSERP and SERPLUS worth it?

Got the ERP offer. I was going to rollover 401 portion to Roth and bank the rest. Now I see the QSERP and SERPLUS. WTH?

If you have qserp you might be old. I rolled mine along with minimum pension into 401k then to a Roth and will pay taxes for Roth with severence dollars. Figure with hillary or bernie as president pre paid taxes are good. I suppose they can decide to tax them again but that would be mean.

Click on the "Intel minimum pension plan" and it takes to a page that shows the monthly benefit at age 65.

On that page, there is a link "Estimate your pension benefits based on different dates".

When you use that tool, it will show a "lump sum" benefit.

How do we find out how much money is in the minimum pension plan? Fidelity told me that you won't see amount until you leave the company. So this serplus and qserp is Intel's way of hanging on to your money using fidelity? I'm taking a partial disbursement and rolling the rest into a ROTH. Time to find another job next year.

Do not forget to cash out the minimum pension plan. Due to record low interest rates, the cash lump sum today is the highest it will ever be. You can roll into an IRA and invest it.

Most companies will secretly hope or even encourage employees do not do this...

Because in a few years, as rates go up, the current pension plan will be "overfunded" so they can withdraw money out if it.

I believe any NQDC(non qualified deferred compensation) will be paid as previously elected.
