I am wondering how many software guys will get impacted this time, why not take this opportunity to start a startup to build software ourselves? Anyone interested?

Because the game is rigged against you.
After 3000HC from Altera, expect 2000+HC cut under Murthy, enough to start something, right at intel's backyard
A FPGA programming startup will also work.
fgg's idea would be perfect, and very ironic... if an ARM SoC from Intel employees helped speed the disruption and ultimate demise of Intel. Sitting right in Intel's backyard an ARM design house startup would have an endless supply of the best talent - people who are fed up with the vision-less politicial bureaucracy that is Intel.
I've been looking for another "Sequent" since I left in 2000 after IBM acquired them. I think a LOT of ex-Sequenters have been looking. MUCH prefer smaller companies to work for.
4-5 good software engineers can build a machine learning software startup in Bay Area. With 2000 engineers, this can be significant resource in Oregon.
It takes a few dozens of decent engineers to put together an ARM SoC. So there is that too...
