Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Who's gonna do all the work after layoffs?

Our group is already quite understaffed. Workload is so crazy two engineers quit within last two years, one got promoted, so we're three engineers short right now. On call rotation is quite tough right now. With all the statistics here we are going to lose at least one more engineer, maybe two.

If I'm going to take their on call days as well I'll go crazy.

Who's gonna work if we are already thin?

Short answer: you will.

Eventually, they may shift engineers from other areas into your module but this process could take weeks if not months.

On Friday, managers are supposed to meet with their teams to review who is left and to deal with work reassignment within the team.

It is possible, if your group is very small, nobody on your team is impacted. Distributions have to be met at the department level, not necessary at each individual team level.

What if the module is factory constraint and under a lot of attention from the very high management. It would be hard to push you-know-who...

From experience I would say to push back. Assuming your team is impacted by this, bring it up to your manager and your 2nd level, and ask this in open forums. Tell them that activities need to be cut due to staffing. Be open to working with them to identify and prioritize all the tasks being done so that the cuts can be made intelligently, and then roll up the impact so that people know the price being paid for this (and of course for CYA).

And if push comes to shove, be ready to change teams or leave entirely.

Oh, and i forgot to mention that our on call is quite rough. We have two engineers covering week and we have three engineers in rotation. On good night's we get 10-15 pages, on bad nights we do not sleep at all. At any given point one of the engineers in rotation is on comp days recovering.

I just don't see how it's going to work if we even lose one of those engineers in rotation. Even if it's going to be an engineer not in sustaining rotation, nobody going to be able to take additional projects... I just don't see how we are going to work.

Unless nobody got SSL4/5 this year, since GL should understand that we will not be able to work.

Is it possible that everybody gets ssl3 and higher in the group?

I am sure BK and Murthy will be ready to help, heck they might be even do some real work for once ;)

Sorry I could not resist, on the serious note it is going to be hell at Intel moving forward with the only motivation is not getting SSL4/5 in the next focal.
