Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

My husband is depressed because I'm unavailable. I'm scrambling to network and seek out jobs in case i'm impacted. Family life has become hard.

Some context: My husband is legally blind from glaucoma, but not disabled enough to qualify for disability. He doesn't work. Computer work is next to impossible because of the fatigue it causes. I haven't been at Intel long and my performance is good, so I will probably survive this next week. But my projects could be impacted in June, and I have reason to believe that at least a couple of them will be cut. My income is barely sufficient to cover my family's needs. Once the severance runs out, my unemployment could be half of what I bring home.

Rationally, I know that everything will work out fine. Life does that. But after coming out of 5+ years of poverty (spouse going blind, family business closing), I'm still recovering from that. He is depressed that I'm not more emotionally available, but he also understands that I need to be 'checked out' for a few days while I pull my work portfolio together.

I see my psychiatrist Monday to address my anxiety. Therapy starts next week, too. I'm trying to keep a level head about this, but geez - I was just starting to get my sea legs and feel great about life at Intel. And BAM! Now this.

I guess I'm the only one wondering if this post is legit by the responses this post has gotten. Her husband "is depressed" because she's trying to find a new job in the event she's impacted? Something smells off about this post (apologies if this it legit). I'd think he'd be happy she was doing something to keep a paycheck and not depressed she wasn't "available". Sorry, her use of "not available" made me think she meant things not exactly G or PG rated, you know? shrug

Do not worry. Everything will work out for the best. Remember that even if you are laid off there are better things to come.

Agree with other posters. Take a deep breath. You will get severance and unemployment depending on what your separation package looks like. Start working on your resume, and submitting for contract jobs on dice.com. You can land a short or long term contract position fairly quick, and that buys you even more time. It's common to go through layoffs. If it creates a significant hardship on your finances, there are many options available to getting bills lowered while your unemployed. Hardships can be filed on IRS for back taxes, which helps with that burden, credit cards, if you purchased protection plans, you can initiate the insurance to pay monthly payments etc. This is an inevitable change in people's lives and you are not alone. Most important, do not get so worked up about it.

Stop and breathe. Why do you think you might be impacted?? Worst case, you are impacted, but there is a nice package you will walk away with that will give you the time you need to network and job seek. You don't need to do it now. Remember your family is more important than Intel. Your family loves you, At intel you are a head count....
