Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Site closures Dupont site - Will there be any focal/stock based ISP this round for this site? Or is everyone safe?

If I take relocation what is the chance of getting cut once in Hillsboro? I don't trust this company. Better to try and look for a job in a better job market.

Any ideas if there is any performance based or project cuts for our site? I don't want to walk in thinking I am fine then I am cut. I could take VSP and look for a better place to work. Hillsboro will be a rat race too. Any thoughts?

Some people want to keep vesting maybe? Stock options etc? Or what if you get paid less elsewhere? There are good reasons to stick with the sinking ship for a bit longer and then seeing how to evacuate. Why do people stay in bad relationships. They still have something to gain even if they are miserable.

Why would you change cabins on a sinking ship?

what I'm very surprised about is that people don't seem to be concerned about the data that's already out there, for example, many people who receive relo offers are being offered to go to OR or AZ...haven't seen anything about offers to relo to FM. Also, FM is a rather small campus as compared to SC, OR and AZ (NM irrelevant because its mfg). Also look at the H1B data, it's broken down by site, this year alone (2016) the FM site has petitioned for almost 200 H1Bs, all for engineering positions...that's about 3 - 4% of the site pop. They announced years ago that new construction for FM8+ is suspended indefinitely. They put up a solar farm and solar parking which will generate $$ even if Intel isn't the campus' tenant so that investment was wise, shouldn't be taken as an indicator that site won't shut down. The servers can be moved to OR, in fact it makes sense that they would want to move them to a place where the climate is cooler because it saves on energy to cool them, SC is out since Loma Prieta is the reason they moved the servers to FM in the first place. HR and Finance can move to SC or OR, they've slowly been moving them out of FM over the past several years anyways, IT might be eventually outsourced, engineering seems to be shifting to H1Bs.... Isn't anyone starting to get a little worried that FM may be a site that gets shut down in the coming years? Strategically, that seems like it could be logical, the campus could be turned into a large business complex easily, not to mention that Kaiser suspended their plans to build a massive hospital in FM because they're still trying to find a suitable location, seems to me that the FM campus would be a perfect location for Kaiser if Intel ever vacated. I hope this isn't the case but watching how sites go from thriving to barely surviving, feels like FM is on that trajectory :(

Everyone wants to charge 1st world prices but pay 3rd world wages. Somehow they expect there will be people with 1st world income to buy their products.

As a 30+ year veteran of this industry, I don't see it as just Intel. It's the entire industry, at least publicly owned companies.

Look at IBM, drastically cut severance pay shortly before doing massive layoffs.

I've worked for a number of large or midsize companies. No small ones.

Small division of a huge company was sold off in one. Some people were paid a large retention bonus to do the transition, and then were let go. Some were allowed to go with the mothership. Most were gone a few years later. Huge company is gone too, brand name is still around, has been through many changes, totally out of the business they were in at the time.

Medium size company I was with was a solid, steady employer in their part of the country. Not a big tech area, salaries weren't stellar but cost of living was low and they were stable. Then the competition started moving jobs overseas and outsourcing, and then so did they to remain competative. First mfg jobs went to right to work states, and then to low wage countries. Engineering followed. Most people I knew there have been laid off. One exception is surprised every year that he's still there.

I'm sure they want relo people to believe they are safe or who will move? Most people don't want to uproot just to find out they have to uproot yet again. Have you heard of this happening to others in the past? Intel has long history of this behavior although worse more recent years. Now the new sheriff in town will make it harder and harder. They want a rinse and repeat culture, in with the new and out with the old cycle.

Amazon is brutal have heard many stories you won't last long. What is the Portland job market like? Will they give higher salary to compensate for the state income tax in Oregon?

There are no guarantees, other than perhaps that they won't ask for relo funds back IF that is specified in your relo agreement. I've heard a rumor that relo'd people are safe from layoff for some period of time, but doubt that's a corporate policy. More a CYA if a manager relos someone who ends up a performance problem a year later it looks bad on them.

Seattle job market appears to be hot if you live far enough north of DP. From south it's a 5-6 hour daily commute, impractical. Just need to be aware of what you're getting into. My friends who went to work for Amazon report a worse life balance than at Intel. 8-5, then 8PM-1AM every night, plus commute headaches, they make it tough to take a vacation day, no sabbaticals (though I expect those disappear next)

Good points. I think the company has people where they want them though. You know with the pay and benefits. Who is going to just quit that? Most of us will be willing to suffer until the kick us out on our as~es. VSP is good only if you know you getting a good job afterward.

@kgu it's not companies that you can't trust, it's people. Especially today, with the "me first, I want it now, and I don't want to pay for it" attitude that so many are peddling. And since companies are made of people, that distrust flows to them as well.

Well, you can't 100% trust ANY company @kgu... but if you read this site, you should have deduced by now that while they pay well, it's isn't a great place to work anymore and hasn't been for a LONG time. I think that's what people are trying to say to others when they say find another place of employment.

Do what you want but don't make me say 'Told ya so!!'. lol

What company can you trust these days? Seems like just so many downsizing I take chance anyway I go. I am thinking the best way to benefit from this.

I think you answered your own question with "I don't trust this company." Truly best to take your separation package, whichever one you're given, and move on to greener pastures with another company - life outside of Intel is great! sincerely wish each of you the best, my heart goes out to everyone still there, reading these posts makes me so thankful that I got out when I did. Happiness = #IntelOutside

Yeah just how much time once I get there. I am sure focal will be even harder there with more people. I probably should not buy a house for a year at least. See what my next focal will be. More back stabbers to beware of!!

Of course you have a chance of getting cut if you move to Hillsboro (or any other place for that matter). Are you people not paying attention to what has been going on???
