Managers getting too powerful

One terrible outcome of BK's actions is that it will make the m*f*ing managers especially the FLMs extremely powerful. Firstly, from what I am hearing, these guys are going to make the decisions as to who stays who goes in the site closures/project cancellations/efficiency reductions. So if you ever pissed off your manager expect the worst.

These SOBs, know that they can get rid of people they don't like by giving them a SSL4/5 at focal. This is much easier than giving an IR. You have no way of fighting it, even an open-door will end at the second level manager. No SLM will help you, they will be glad that FLM is giving SSL4/5 so they don't have to force it.

I know of an ahe FLM who is totally incompetent, who targets one or more of his employees for SSL4/5 or IR every year. SLM knows that this guy is incompetent but still keeps him around as he helps him meet the quotas so he doesn't have to force it on other managers.

Consider this -- how is a company like this going to have employees that take risks and do bold things?

One bad decision, one misstep with your manager (even if you made the correct decision for the company), one tour with a group of super high performers and you're gone.

I heard that only 25% will be offered relocation. The rest will be given VSP or ISP. Also the relo budget is a fixed amount. If your site has a number of VPs and senior people - grade 10/11/12 they will consume most the $s and the number of relos offered to the rest of the people will be much less than 25%, could be even 0.

Managers have been way too powerful for a long time at Intel. Robert Noyce would not approve of how things are run nowadays.

They are only giving the departments 50% of the closed site budget for relocating new employees. So unless your site is doing a task which is growing they can not relocate more than 1/2 of the people.

OP, I know one manager like that too (start targeting one person at the beginning of the year for IR, destroy his/her morale, make their life miserable and give an IR at the end of the year). He is hale and hearty at Intel. I have no clue how these people can sleep at night after causing unspeakable misery and destroying people's life.

I work in Dupont which is closing. It was IMPLIED that if you want to relocate to Oregon you could. They just ask that you talk to your manager and let them know you will relocate. This is the party line. The reality, as told to me by 3 different managers (2 first level and one second level), is that when you tell your manager that you will relocate, you will be ranked as to your value to the company and the continuing projects. That information will be passed up the management chain. Then they will pick and choose their desired employees for relocation. Outwardly, it appears almost all can relocate, but the reality is it will be a much smaller percentage that will be offered relocation. Its sounds like they will move almost all of Dupont to Oregon, but in reality Oregon (JF5) doesn't have that kind of space. This is a headcount reduction first and site consolidation second.
