Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Why are diversity employees exempt from performance layoffs? What message is Intel sending? It's so $!#&@ screwed up.

Diverse employees are protected to great extent at Intel. As a former Intel manager, I have witnessed on numerous occasions of poor-performing minorities being "saved" by senior management / HR reviews due strictly to the focal diversity dashboard. IC's don't know the ugly truth in the focal process as it pertains to diversity. Failed minorities just get moved around to hit the C-level indicators.

bkf - That's an interesting observation. To approach this in a more constructive way, I guess the we should try and understand why "non-Indian" folks aren't able to do the same. Do you have any thoughts on this? I've seen a lot of racist/snarky posts here painting the focal process as something that is completely independent of actual work contributions (and maybe that's true) but I'm just trying to understand what makes everyone else incapable of doing the same.

You will see few non-whites (i.e. most non-white in Intel are Indians) being layoff as they tend do to very well in the focals by ensuring their non-white friends and bosses give them great ratings.

I agree. However wonder if holders of SB1 visas will be affected, laying off American citizen but keeping SB1 visa holders would not sound fair to me? Have you heard anything on this?

Diversity folks aren't being exempt from this action. I'm impacted and I fall into the diversity category. I'm thankful I'll get the enhanced retirement package instead of the ISP package. This blows considering in my 27yr history I got level 4 stock this year.

Caucasians are minorities in groups I've worked in. One might argue they're not well represented in Intel relative to the available work force. So, in theory, the diversity and inclusion initiative should help Intel hire more Caucasians over Indians and Asian male. Whether that's good or bad, I can't say. But philosophically, I do believe we need to be inclusive and hire the best fit for the position regardless of that person's background. That's what BK and HR have been saying all along. The problem is when it gets executed on the ground, middle management take the easy way out to hit quotas and allow the hiring of only diversity candidate. If FLM's can't find any qualified candidate from the diversity pool, then they can easily choose not to hire. I don't believe the problem is BK. The problem is with middle and first line management not executing the initiative in accordance with the spirit of the initiative.

jwa - implying people are racist because they don't think forced racial quotas are a good idea is a disingenuous at best.

I'm of the mindset that the best person for the job should get the job, regardless of skin color.

I think quotas for interviewing make sense -- so you can make sure that people aren't being excluded based on race for an opportunity -- but actual hiring quotas -- come on now.

I agree that the criteria for the layoffs doesn't use diversity, but it does use focal. And focal uses diversity to help increase minorities in higher grades. So in an indirect way, OP is correct.

And if you think his point has to do with not wanting a diverse workplace then you're just plain retarded.

I think what jwa is saying is that there is a quota for employees with 3 special types of skin color COMING INTO Intel, but there is no quota on employees with those 3 special types of skin color LEAVING Intel. And given that Intel still needs more of these 3 special groups by 2020 (to hit their publicly stated quota), how many employees in those groups will likely be laid off??? ... I'm guessing not many. Too bad Intel will never share the data.

Would you stop it with the diversity ranting? Diverse employees are not exempted. We are all Intel employees no matter what color. If you can't handle a diverse workplace, then don't let the door hit you where the good lord split you.
