There are some people that are going to be let go that really love this company. I fall into this category. I'm not bitter by it. If it happens it will hurt, I will struggle, but I will still love Intel. It's sad that so many of you bitter, and venomous people didn't get laid off before me. I don't deserve it. But, many of you that post on this site do. Most don't, but many do. The good people are the lurkers, like me, that skip all of your conspiracy theories and get even schemes, and hurtful words, in the hope to get a little bit of information that will give us a glimmer of hope that we can squeeze past this lay off to show intel how truly wonderful we are. I started on January 4th this year after trying to get hired for over fifteen years. I idolize this wonderful company. I cried when I got hired, and I will cry if I get fired. I hope I get the chance to prove my worth and do the best that I can, and more! I love Intel today, and I will after the dust settles, even if they have to let me go too! Business is business. There are 11% being let go, but there are 89% that are staying that need Intel to be on the cutting edge and one of the wealthiest companies in the world. I'm sorry to rain on the parade of your venomous pity party, and I hope the good people that are sharing truthful info about what is happening in the name of trying to be helpful will still do so. For those of us that don't make it through the layoffs, I wish you good luck, and if you have a positive attitude you will stand back up and shake the dirt off and move on to do great things! Fingers crossed for all of us good folks! The mean venom throwers....you will repeat rinse and repeat. Remember that, only you can fix yourself.

OP: I used to be you. I am 2 decades in now and feel very differently. I hope that your experience at Intel continues to be a positive one.
I have realized, based on my current feelings for and opinions of this company and its "leadership," that it is time for me to go. If I am not eligible for ISP, I probably will be eligible for VSP. I will take the opportunity to find something that I am more excited about. I want a job that I don't dread going to more often than not.
I don't want to appear insensitive here, but so many "lifers" at Intel have this sense of entitlement that they are exempt from corporate downsizing and re-orgs. It's unheard of to even consider people were actually allowed to work at a company for as many years as they have at Intel. The average period for most companies is 7-10 years, and your gone. That's the way it is. Not to mention, Intel is extremely generous in their separation packages. Too many times, employees are escorted out with their final paycheck in hand and that's it at most corporations. Intel does not owe people any more than it has already done. Which is a lot. I'm sad for the people facing hardship as a result of this, but it's the way it is and you are best served to market your experience and find what you can. My advice to those that aren't really sure how to land your next gig, don't expect you will find another Intel. Get on Dice.com, linkedin and other job boards and consider jumping in the contracting/consulting world as a way to get your foot in other places. Expect you will go through several cycles before landing another permanent situation. Contracting has many freedoms. The best one is NO PERFORMANCE REVIEWS. You take a gig, work for several years in a role that does not allow the company to treat you like an employee, and you build valuable skills. Plus, most contracting firms will let you work W2 and offer health insurance. I've helped many people take off their company hat and build their portfolio in that consulting/contracting world. OP, while your post is very positive, please keep in mind that most everyone posting here who has served many years at Intel felt exactly as you do when they only had 4 months in. I know I did...but after you sacrifice your life for almost 2 decades, work 60 - 75 hours a weeks for years, and sacrifice everything outside of Intel only to be shown the door as though you are worthless its quite damaging to the soul. Please keep that in mind before you judge people who are literally seeing their entire work history erased. Agree with KRJ, you are clearly in the "honeymoon phase" as is everyone in their first few months...perhaps you do not realize that the people who get impacted by ISO specifically, are marked as ineligible for rehire which puts a black mark on their entire employment history with Intel, making it less likely that they will be employable elsewhere. It is not as simple as "get back up and shake off the dirt".
Word of advice, you're extremely positive which is genuinely noble, though in these tough times you should consider taking it down a notch because it may create resentment from cohorts rather than inspiration which is what I believe is your intent. Wish you the best and hope you never have to feel the pain of being told that you're getting termed after many years of dedication...I keep all my friends and old colleagues in my thoughts and prayers, I'm so happy I left when I did...
Well, I think you are still so naive and I really respect that. I was like that many years ago. I even rejected pricipal offer from other company and stayed with Intel with full of hope that this company could do much better as we would do much better. Well now I feel I was, have been so stupid. If you ever treated like me or most of us here, you would just pour tons of curse for those blood sucking managers and upper level management lines. Well, layoff is just layoff, any company can do and based on their biz needs. However, the important thing here is that most of us here have worked so hard, so loyal to this company even after having health issues, scarificing personal and family life. Then in return, by this stupid focal, corrupted manangers and HR policy, we are kicked out like a poor old dog with tons of humiliation. That is why I guess most of us are upset. There is no pride like those old glorious days here, just full of shameful, dirty things are prevailing. I have seen many of my good colleagues (both in technically and personally) are treated badly. I can even tell you detailed examples here but I will just keep silent because it really makes me puke. So, if you can, hang in there and good luck to you all.
I'm a 'lifer' and joined intel in 2000 after several attempts , I thought I'd be here till I retired in the worlds most innovative company ....
That bubble burst some time ago - SET was the last major lay off and a lot of good people were let go - eventually they were replaced with crap people instead.
The company has been in innovational decline since 2005/6 - no different to MSFT.
There is a huge lack of vision at all levels - my management are nothing short of a disgrace ... Intel arrogantly thinks it can enter and own new segments, but are are far from a traditional embedded company .... (Notice all growth segments are embedded).
I have been looking for an exit for 3 years - but am trapped by the comp.... As a senior IC (MS9) the money is too good to walk away from.... I'm yet to get an offer elsewhere that matches it.
Saying that - I know many who moved on and now would love to come back ... Business is business and most major companies are similar in many ways.
Depending on packages , if eligible I will look at VSP. But as a high performer I bet I won't get the opportunity.
That said, change is good for the company and is its only chance - need to clear out the remaining fat cats - fisher, Bryant , divest the distracting acquisitions (wind river) and get back to silicon...
The "venom" as you call it is simply coming from the fact that Intel is a hollow shell of what it once was. We who have been here a while remember when politics was at a minimum and meritocracy was largely honored. Maybe Intel is still great in your eyes OP, but it has fallen very very far. It's likely that you're still in your "honeymoon phase" with Intel and you'll start to see the issues yourself in the future. Best of luck to you.
@eew - Got a bit of a chuckle from your post and got me thinking if Intel has changed me much over the many years. My wife says I'm grumpy, ha ha. I suppose most corporations are similar in that you're bound to get in a fair share of battles, sink or swim as they say.

OP - it's foolish to think that everyone posting on here is normally this angry or 'venomous' as you put it.
There are a lot of us who are losing their jobs. This sh-- sucks. Some of us handle it better than others -- but it's perfectly normal to be upset.
Get off your high horse and try empathizing for a minute. Your post is entirely self-serving and the only thing it accomplishes is making you feel superior to people you don't know the first thing about.
new guy, you haven't had your focal yet. you are probably not on the chopping block this time. with your holier-than-thou attitude I guess you are probably not going to last long at intel. just watch how thing will play out as you go along. my guess you will be eaten alive. somehow you are arrogant enough to rate yourself on-par or higher than the engineers who have worked at Intel for 10+ years and find themselves on the Intel chopping block this time.

Yep, as was already said, best wishes to all for this coming week, I think it's going to be a difficult week whether you get laid off or not. I think I feel the worst for the people who really don't know yet, some of the new hires etc who may or may not fit the "leaked" criteria. Perhaps hoping that by some slimmer they might get through it. Has to be heart wrenching to get a meeting invite (or however they are going to do it) this coming week, ugh.
I guess I'm one of the luckier ones in that I don't believe I fall into the ISP criteria, (this time, although who really knows), yet I'm older and will most likely take the enhanced retirement if offered. It's kind of a catch 22 for me, if I try to stick around I am certain I will get it either later this year or without doubt next focal, I have no doubt about that. Unless I maybe tried to take a voluntary pay grade reduction, but still ... it's a hard choice. Yet, here I sit complaining while so many others won't have any choice. And, what also kind of gets to me is I've known quite a few good friends (best workers and team mates you could hope for) who've been let go through no fault of their own, either bad management or blamed for things which were not there fault at all, sad.
