Intel CEO says leadership team has received threats for company’s stance on diversity

Intel is widely seen as a leader around corporate diversity in tech. But, it turns out, some Intel employees are not happy with the company’s stance on it. In fact, there’s “been a bit of a backlash within the company” and even threats made toward the company’s senior leadership team, Intel CEO Brian Krzanich told Rev. Jesse Jackson on stage at the PushTech2020 conference today in San Francisco.

“People worry that as a white man, you’re kind of under siege to a certain extent,” Krzanich said. “There’s been a bit of resistance. We’ve even had a few threats and things like that on some of our leadership team around our position on diversity and inclusion. We stand up there and just remind everybody it’s not an exclusive process. We’re not bringing in women or African-Americans or Hispanics in exclusion to other people. We’re actually just trying to bring them in and be a part of the whole environment.”

[Update 10:19 a.m. PT: Regarding what kind of threats the leadership team received, an Intel spokesperson said, “The context here is that any time you undertake a big initiative it’s a journey and an ongoing process toward change and evolution. I know you mentioned the words can mean many things so this is the context.”]

Over the last year or so, Intel has had a 30 percent increase in its underrepresented minority population, bringing the total up to 12 percent company-wide, Krzanich said. He also noted that Intel surpassed its hiring goals with 43.3 percent of its new hires in the past year or so being female or coming from an underrepresented minority group.

Included in Intel’s next diversity report will be employee pay data broken down by gender and race.

“We are going with the data and we are going public,” Krzanich said. “I almost hope there are gaps, not because I want people to be underpaid, but because it’s a problem I can fix. I’m an engineer, I like fixing problems.”

This all comes a little more than a year after Krzanich announced Intel’s $300 million commitment to diversity, which has included partnerships with historically black colleges and universities, as well as nonprofit organization CODE2040. Regarding the “pipeline problem” in tech, Krzanich said that it’s “bunk.”

“That’s just not true that you can’t find good minority, women candidates,” Krzanich said. “If you send a diverse team to diverse colleges, you suddenly come back with a great pipeline.”

I've overheard staffing and hiring managers talk about diversity and how they handle the hiring process.

One did not even look at the resumes, handed the resumes to the staffing group and told them to make offers to meet the quota on diversity.

Why is he even talking about hiring at all if the company is having to downsize by 12000 workers? Shouldnt there be a hiring freeze? These guys are sneaky...

They are very close to a major Positive discrimination class action ... I wonder if they will share the diversity data for the layoffs ?

I've seen 'many' very unqualified diversity hires at the expense of the experienced white male ...

I'm actually very pro diversity btw and have a strong mix in my team that I'm proud to say was achieved on merit and skill sets - but this took many years and was a natural process - basic management really , I don't need a quota to build a team.

BK's lie: "If you send a diverse team to diverse colleges, you suddenly come back with a great pipeline.” If that were actually true then the solution to the problem would be to have a quota NOT FOR EMPLOYEES but rather for OFFERS to candidates. The dirty truth and the reason he doesn't use offers is that black, hispanic, and native american candidates are being given more money from other companies. So Intel either pays more for the quota skin color or has to find more candidates... we often end up just paying more. So not only are the folks with the "right" skin color protected from layoffs, they are also likely paid more for the same job.

"So all this talk about hiring the best candidates is just that: talk. If you are black, Hispanic, Native American or female (or better: some combination of these), you get a job without having to compete, because you are a quota hire."

This is entirely true, and it all started in 2004. I was a manager then and made all kinds of hay about this to HR, but the narrative squashed the facts. If ANYONE believes that forced diversity is positive in any way at all, just read Thomas Sowell (Senior Fellow - Hoover Institute, Standford University). He has compiled an amazing archive of research on the subject citing many instances of "diversity failure."

What we're getting is a con job by the libs where ignoring the facts is paramount to policy implementation.

Hard Work, Loyalty, Unpaid Overtime, Networking, Learning the Ropes, etc. is meaningless when the ship is sinking. Insult is added to injury when replaced by a diversity hire to fill a quota or a cheap H-1B. The listing of the ship will increase rapidly from here.

I wish just once the media would ask him what a Silver Bullet hire is, and how that doesn't constitute an anti-competitive hiring practice.

Not sure if it's still done, but for a while, if you found a technical female or technical URM, you could hire them without a req. when someone else left your team, they simply would not be back filled as you already had the new person.

Which essentially means there was a job opening that never got posted and no one else was allowed to apply.

So all this talk about hiring the best candidates is just that: talk. If you are black, Hispanic, Native American or female (or better: some combination of these), you get a job without having to compete, because you are a quota hire.

There was an internal post @ 2 years ago that tortuously tried to make the case that their diversity initiative was not a zero-sum game. Nobody believed it since it is hysterically and patently false. The day that BK and JJ were together on stage touting this joyful union of kaleidoscope colors and rainbows was the day I retired. This latest round of layoffs seems warranted from a business and strategy perspective, but those in the cross-hairs will be (as has been in the actions of last summer) are older males with a strange off-white tint that some people call "caucasian", now a dirty word in our ecosystem thanks to Obama. Some of that very initiative is directly responsible and invariably tied at the waist to forced and unforced attrition. Combine the diversity fraud with HB1's and you have a company destined for continued mediocrity. The company should split in two.

Another mis-step by Intel to get in bed with JJ and this will take them down in the long run.

hahaha, he is a warrior engineer. Even with the threats he is receiving he will continue this policy. We just need another round of 12000 layoffs after next focal. Ask Bain and HR to work together and Set up the poor employees during focal with SSL4/5. BK will take home his $20M. He is an engineer.

By definition, you're excluding the stronger candidate in favor of the under-represented individual. How is that not an exclusive process?

Also, my lack of trust wants to believe the threats were things like threats to leave or interrupt a project. But anybody who made a real threat, intending to follow through with it or not, is stupid. Also, doing that helps nobody, especially that person.

Here's a problem you can fix BK.

Problem statement

A company that missed the boat on mobile due to executives but still makes billions a year wants to put 12000 people that busted their asses for that company out of work.

Solution

Let's hear it engineer, how do you fix this?
