Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Doesn't Intel management realize this is a big reason for schedule hits, in itself?

Never really knowing you and your co-workers are safe. Year after year. Layoffs big and small. Trying to work effectively when you know this time it might just be you or it might be your work group or your project. Phew - I dodged that bullet. That sense of relief - and guilt that makes it hard to focus. Perhaps you were re-organized into a different group. You have lost a few key members of your team - Maybe people lost were not "high achievers" but they were rocks, helping hold the project together, fulfilling critical goals, providing known critical skills and information.

Maybe, just maybe, you get to re-fill a couple positions because now you are seriously understaffed. Now you have new team members without the knowledge of those you lost. You spend a lot of time when you used to be effectively working trying to bring the new people up to speed and integrate them and build another cohesive team. Finally everyone starts to click, starts to once again feel "normal" and become efficient again.

And then the rumors start - there is going to be another layoff. Is it me and my group this time? ...

Blaming capitalism for increases in efficiency through automation is just plain stupid. Are you Amish? Not that there's anything wrong with that...

ueq, My company is running at 100% capacity gives me comfort and we dont hire just for empire building On the other hand look at Intel. They have so much FAT. 11% is not nearly enough. They should cut more like 50 % possibly more. I am dead serious and not being sarcastic. There is just way too many people hired for empire building for managers to get bigger pay checks and bonuses. Glad I don't work there anymore and don't feel sorry for those who do as they are milking the system. It's just like being on welfare working at Intel

The issue is that capitalism is constantly reducing workers and replacing them with machine, computer or slaves. Especially, engineers where they are seen as overhead and very expendable. Although high tech made many of people rich, I would say those days are long gone. This entire scenario is indicative to a society where they are driving the middle into poverty while the entire time getting richer.

Intel has set the new number/bar for the industry to 11% watch now as the industries start reducing head count by 11%. Because if you are a CFO, your board will be asking you why you are not laying off 11% like Intel. For the thousands getting laid off and for the thousands to follow your only avenue would be to seek contracts. I say form unions. It's a vicious cycle out there and no one is looking out for you. Unity we stand divided we fall.

Companies like Apple, Facebook and Google have not had a public layoff in recent memory. What are they doing right that Intel can't seem to do, hmm....

They need to hire more high school kids to replace the Intel 20n yr veterans.

Here is a simple way to fix the issue: If a layoff of 100+ is announced, the CEO has to go! Then, they would work their rear off instead of casually deciding in 1 round table with the cool "downsize it"! and then pretend it was a "hard" decision when they come out giggling.

Empire building is done by hiring more and more people. That's how management grows their team and gets promoted.

Reduce the layoffs. If you know you have one coming up, stop hiring for 6 months or so before - except where absolutely critical. You will probably never be able to eliminate layoffs. But when you have as many as Intel does, maybe you have trouble managing your workforce adequately. You need proactive change - not reactive change.

I'm sure management does know about this problem. What would you do if you were in charge? Never layoff anybody and let the snowball get bigger and bigger until it can't move anymore? Companies that do not react to change will go out of business eventually.
