Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

How would you fix Intel?

Since we all rant quite a bit here on layoffs.com let's be a bit constructive - outline your fix in this thread.

How is Intel's top management compared with Qualcomm's. Their once 8th ranked passed-up is now the brain of Intel. So I think we need a more intelligent CEO. The rest is just details.

Get rid of BK.

End diversity preferential discrimination.

Rejustify all processes that consume >30 seconds of time to follow. HVI, email classification, access permissions, laptop random reboots, labs hoarding equipment behind locked doors, etc. Show me a damn good justification for it, else revamp or remove it.

Put out a client CPU with >20% perf increase over the prior gen. Client sucks mainly because there's no compelling reason to upgrade. Fix it.

Stop making ads that scream out "50 year old corporate marketer trying to appeal to millenials because I know what they want better than anyone". No you don't, you're not fooling anyone, and that stuff is cringeworthy. Please, make it stop. Millenials aren't that dumb, stop pretending they'll fall for it.

I'll call this a decent start.

Momentum and entrenched bureaucracy kept Intel from being able to adjust to the changes in reality. This is not new. In early 2000 I was chatting with Gordon Moore and he already felt the constipation building in the company.

Unfortunately for Intel, I think it is beyond redemption. The place is inundated with politicians, frauds, and combinations of the two in highly impactful management positions. Being frank and honest,.. Intel's best days were behind it 10 years ago, closer to 15.

She was a great company in her day, one of the best most innovative organizations on the planet, .... but like Apollo Computer, Sun Micro, Wang Labs, DEC and countless others before her,.... All things must pass.

It is so sad that Intel is the Titanic right now. Just slowly sinking. Last years layoffs caused company morale to go so low. This caused people inside to become demotivated. Even worse, this focus on Diversity is a Joke!! Yes a Joke!! FB and Google are not suffering with Diversity issues. If a company has to focus on something like this, it's a problem in itself. Two get ride of the middle management (Target Grades 10 and above) This is were the problem lies. No one from this group has been FIRED on the spot. I am not talking about the high level executives that left, I am talking about all the people reporting to them. They hold the keys to this whole thing. Even in this 11,000 layoffs, the worker bees will be let go while the FAT cats keep becoming FAT and as soon as the Titanic sinks, they will get on the life boat and sail away.

All the suggestions so far could be labelled with the heading "stop being a large bureaucratic company and look like you were X years ago Intel". Which is the same thing as saying it can't be done. Companies do not stop being bureaucratic. Instead they go through growth, decline and death phases like all natural things. Now like any 70 year old Intel can do less than when she was 30. Unfortunately to fix it she needs to die. Then the people inside Intel can move on to do great things and not be held back by a old bureaucratic Intel.

I would hire only the most qualified candidates for each position instead of systematically rejecting them (and firing them) based only on their gender or ethnicity. If the most qualified is white, black, Indian, man or woman then that's who we bring in or keep. Whatever they are, they are employees first. Bring in the most qualified.

I would get rid of the awful focal system. Its terrible as a manager to give one message all year only to be forced to give a different message at focal just to meet a distribution. Even worse for the employee, especially if they are on a high performing team when some loafer in another group can get a better annual review because he is surrounded by loafers. Ridiculous.

Acquire less and form more strategic partnerships because acquisitions seem to lead to bringing on lots of people who add to the size of the company. The former employees will be sucked dry, and most discarded in the next layoff.

Go back to the days before project management by committee. Intel used to allow individuals to make decisions Now it has to be in a group during a meeting

Stop daily meetings for the hole teams.

Quit hiring only PHD's and Masters degrees like they do now. This is why they need H1B's. Many qualified American students don't have the resources to continue their education beyond Four years. While most of the H1B's come from rich foreign families.

Quit working teams on absurd schedules. Allow people to take holidays and vacations again

Return to the principles of Grove and Noyce. Allow true constructive confrontation. Now a days that is a sure way to get on the RIF lists at times like this.

If you are missing critical skills, select internal people who have the capacity to learn those and train them for these roles. Or move internal people who do have those skills and would otherwise be in a cut into the roles, rather than eliminate them. Over the years, a lot of seriously talented individuals have been laid off.

You can not fix intel. Management is oblivious, lies go up the reporting chain to cover up failures. Good workers are completely demoralized. Seriously, besides the less than 1 year RCG the place is like a zombie land, the half sized cube walls remove all privacy so you can see the despise and fear among everyone... maybe take the last few scenes out of Office Space and play "the roof is on fire" in the background?

Open an anonymous, internal blog and ask the same thing there. Advertise that its there.

Also allow people (anonymously or publicly) to submit ideas about what makes it harder for them to perform. For example, how many tools make it easier for smaller and smaller IT groups to manage, but make it harder for 100,000 other people to work? Getting more people to be working efficiently will help the bottom line tremendously.
