We'd instantly be #2 in mobile and have a great baseline from which to grow. Why are we wasting billions for 1% share? Fire 12k people in the USA, buy MediaTek (7k employees in Taiwan), and we're good for at least a decade or more.

Intel is waiting for the price war with Qualcomm to drop MediaTek shares further.
....buying MediaTek is not going to be easy as the Chinese govt will get involved...they want to be self-dependant and not depend on Qualcomm and Intel (usa based companies)...
chinese/Taiwanese govt will not agree to a merger
MTK is expanding in US, doubled office space and head count in bay area in 2015 ---- their director in HW engr told me during my last year's interview with them ---- the company is like mrvl or brcm, flooded with taiwanese and chinese and india engrs. but MTK have free dinner/supper to hold you as late as 7/8pm (maybe conference call with taiwan or asian headquarter/costumers). The MTK building in bay area is next to NXP --- NXP acquired an solid state storage company with some strategical direction change in 2015, eating in 900 people, and layoff 1200 in 2016 ---- eating in too much, need to spitting out.
