Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM to lay-off 14,000 in Q1 2016 - Sacconaghi's (Bernstein Investments) Analysis

This is probably the most accurate analysis so far, with $70K/head-cut being a realistic estimate.

“We have estimated that it has historically cost IBM about $70,000 to eliminate an employee, which would imply a workforce reduction of about 14,000 employees this quarter,” he said.

The note from Bernstein estimated IBM saved $6.78bn from “workforce rebalancing” in the last decade by cutting some 96,986 jobs.

In the UK alone, Big Blue has put 1,352 people at risk in the Global Technology Services wing, with 185 to be told of their fate by April. Over at UK Labs, 123 out of 900 heads are going to be chopped.

And company insiders have now told us that 73 peeps in Global Business Services (GBS) with “non-strategic skills” and 20 partner-level staffers are also being lined up to exit the building on a permanent basis.

I spent 35 years at IBM. I was proud to have had the opportunity to work in IBM for that many years. I know that I provided value to my colleagues, IBM and my customers. Yes, I made a few mistakes during my career, but none that were a "bet your job". Also, that is how you learn. I was laid off, sorry "Resourced" , a few years ago. For a company that was founded on respect for the individual as one of it's key practices, it has certainly eroded that principal over the years. I believe many executives still reap the benefits of significant bonuses while the company reinvents itself in the Cloud, Data Analytics, Watson and Mobility.. Which is a cover for it's overall failing business.. 15 straight quarters of losses.. I guess what disturbs me the most was a story that Ginny received a $3.5M bonus based on the results from 2014.. What results were there? Yes, the Cloud business continues to grow at high double digits per year, however, results for a CEO are suppose to be for overall performance.. So we layoff tens of thousands of employees (because they did not meet their PBC goals), cut their severance, so executives can receive bonuses.. I think there needs to be replacements at the top of the IBM food chain..

I am a customer, the cuts are affecting the quality, at least as GBS is concerned. You buy IBM brand and quality, but you end up dealing with an off-shore hell – it’s confusing for customers, it’s disappointing and you can only be fooled once.

HP is not any better, they do the same thing, even worse. This cannot continue and it’s just a matter of time when the show will be over – I do have some say in the decision making processes and will be pushing for a mid-tier company with 100% onshore presence / domestic resources.

I would think 70K per head @ 6 months severance.

With just one month severance, the estimate of 14K effected ibmers can be much higher......
