Exit or MediaTek would be the RATIONAL next step, but we've got some execs with egos in play. When that happens I'm never surprised how long Intel decides to play catch up. Catch up is fine if you do it right, but the history in Intel's mobile biz is to catch up to where the market was... and then still be behind.

Verizon is locked into Qualcomm modems on its network so QC owns the North American baseband market. Also, Intel is well behind QC in baseband chips per Motley Fool. Either exiting the market or buying MediaTek is the next step.

@-1fky: Rumors are only rumors. Given the writeup in http://www.fool.com/investing/general/2016/02/22/stick-a-fork-in-intel-corps-cellular-modem-efforts.aspx I am not optimistic.

Wait. I'm confused over this thread. Intel definitely has a spot in iphone 7 but it's unclear how big, right? that rumor is coming from both in and outside of Intel. I have to believe it's true. Plus, back in 2013 (stock was $24), Barron's predicted Intel stock would double by the summer of 2018 and although we won't make double (unless a miracle happens), our stock is being upgraded all over the place. Wall street predicts a 7% rise next year because of Altera alone. Some analysts are predicting $38 by the end of 2016. Sounds to me like we're doing just fine.

Wow, to heck with the CPU (good job, Otellini!), but now we can't even get a design win with a friggin' modem chip.

We should've never sold off XScale.

On the eve of the iPhone 6s launch, analysts from Northland Capital claimed that Intel won a full 50% of iPhone 6s/6s Plus modem business, but in reality, it won precisely zero....
