Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

Working at Dell

I left Dell in 2015 after 5 long years there. The company was just too big for me – I felt I was making only a marginal impact no matter how hard I tried. Dell is highly matrixed in every aspect, especially when it comes to making decisions. It took forever to make a change and it was always painful – any decision we needed to make took forever.

They also look at how much tenure you have, no matter what kind of skills or qualities you bring to the table, even 5 years was not enough. You need to know how to do things “the Dell Way” which never made sense to me. If you are younger and want to work on the cutting edge stuff, this is not a place for you and take in count Dell layoffs that were taking place frequently – you’ll want to look somewhere else.

This brings me to my last point – pay and benefits. That plain sucked, they do not pay even average wages for any given position, you will not be happy but they will promise that things will improve. Yes, but only if you get promoted, but since that’s based on tenure, it’ll take forever for you to advance. Also, when Dell does layoffs, they lay off people with less tenure, so that also does not play into your favor.

One must not forget Dell cashed in a billion in stocks in a short period, several months before the first financial crash. This left many 401k holders in Dell stock at the time out to dry. Years go on but stock never ever when back to the high 80s and above. CEO came and went, many form big tech companies, who still got to walk with millions just for showing up to work the first day. The only thing that kept some of the worker jobs in the US are US government contracts.

If a private company spends almost 100 billion in less than 4 years, how much does the widget cost consumers to turn a profit in say 8yrs. Remember CEO and Sales will still always get their big payouts even if there is no profit. If say 1 billion was spent on worker bee salaries or payroll, wow what talent one could keep.

I'm no spring chicken, but my experience with Dell was wonderful. I worked for Dell for about 2 years on temp assignments and was always treated with respect, and worked with many great team members. My last assignment ended, job was completed, and I needed to continue working so I took a local job as a permanent employee, I re-applied with Dell very recently, and hoping to come back soon... No ill statements from me, it was ALL great. Just so sorry to learn your experience was not so good.

I work for Dell since 2006. Its the best place to work. If you want to make money at this company you need to be on the sales team. Most people I know who left Dell for greener pastures have come back. The grass was not greener outside Dell. Good luck in your new life. Cheers. Norm

It doesnt matter where you work. It is what you make of it. Perhaps you need to look in the mirror first instead of crying online. Good luck with the new adventures!
