Thread regarding Sears layoffs

Why don't they just tell us what stores are closing? I am at retirement age so I'm OK but younger people are struggling with this!

For a number of reasons. One, they do not want every associate to jump ship over night, forcing a staff less store to shut its doors prematurely before they can make "some" money from the liquidating the rest of the products. Also, the chaos it could cause would lead a large local public backlash not only to the store, but the company as a whole. Which then will further undermine the stock prices and investor interest in the company.

As I said before. Sears in not in business to do business. At least in the retail sense. Lambert bought Sears as a Real Estate scheme. If he wanted a old retail chain to be basically a Real Estate firm, he should had made it into such sense the beginning.

SM are usually told the day before the announcement of a store closing, the District managers maybe a week before. Hoffman Estates want to make sure that no one quits weeks before a store closes.

Our store closed and we had to stay until the last day (until the store was put back to original condition) or we would not get any severance bonus pay. What they failed to tell us was that we would work 60 hour weeks for 40 hour pay and if we quit or complained all severance or other pay would be forfeited. We had to sign a form saying we would stay and not say anything to anybody or file a lawsuit or we would not be paid.

I would love to be a part of a class action suit against Eddie and his company.

In the stores the managers tell the associates that the only why to keep your store open is to meet all the metrics Sears wants, but then they close stores such as the Scranton,pa store which had great metrics because the mall wanted to rasise the rent and Seasrs said no way. What really would keep a mall store open if their lease is up this year?

If they tell you ahead of time everyone will jump ship. A lot of times the store manager is paid a bonus if they stay until the store is totally closed to keep them from leaving early. Eddie closes stores a little at a time to stay under the media radar and to keep investors from selling off. This also keeps the stock from getting any lower. Boy I am glad I sold all of mine years ago.
