I would like to leave the company, however, it should be nice if I can get severance. My plan is to leave in the fall, however if I was to get the severance I wouldn't mind leaving right now.
Maybe I can save somebody from getting laid off, while turning this into something that would be financially beneficial for me.
I've been with IBM for about three years now, what do you think, is this an option? How would HR react?
I know folks who've asked for several years to volunteer for severance in exchange for a nice package. From what I hear HR won't even consider it. They want to choose who stays and who goes, employee morale be damned.
Prior comment assumes you are a US employee, some other countries do offer voluntary redundancy at times.
HR would say not allowed. Line managers make the decision based on business need, future skill requirements, and performance considerations. Depending on your relationship with your first line manager you could possibly subtly plant the seed, but if you are not selected now you have a manager that knows your hearts not really in it for the long term.
