Thread regarding Chevron Corp. layoffs

Negotiating severance terms

I would assume that the terms are standard and non-negotiable for the Chevron severance...but I thought I'd go ahead and ask. Did anyone try to negotiate some different terms? For health care, or end date, or anything?

Of course you can, but you need to have something to negotiate with. Years of service doesn't count also negative things in the realm of blackmail will just get you a nice jail cell. What do you bring to the table that will benefit Chevron in the coming year or two? If you can't think of anything just take what they offer and slip slide away. If you are value added, speak up, visit with the right level, and sell your deal. Worked out quite nicely for me.

Everything is negotiable. Doesn't mean you are going to get your way by any means. But if you don't ask you certainly won't get jack squat. Have you ever taken a negotiating class (hopefully from somewhere besides Chevron)?

By the way, good people are getting very good jobs in this market. A lot of companies are using this downturn to get rid of for lack of a better term "deadwood" and replace them with high performers. That's where the negotiating comes in.

@1vmw, I have a picture of our BU's HR Manager in a compromising position (jerking off in the toilet stall). What's your opinion? Do you think I have leverage to negotiate the terms of my severance?

Unless you have documented (mini cassette recording or written) evidence of massive kickbacks, corruption or photos of live boys/dead girls you have little leverage to negotiate better severence terms. Again there is no legal requirement. Best bet is to convince management you are needed a few extra months to train your horizons/H1 replacement or finish and document your most crucial current work.

There are some upper mgmt employees that either retired or were left standing that negotiated their final dates to be after April 1 so they will qualify for 2016 CIP.... more special favors for those who made the poor decisions that put Chevron where it is today

It's very unlikely to negotiate the timing of your exit from the company. There's no negotiation about the terms of severance pay. No deferral, no partial payment or any other accommodation for tax reasons.

"Everything is always negotiable." That's just a cliche. Try negotiating severance pay.
