Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

I see a lot of hate for TTS, is it worth joining as a TLP or should I just join a tech company instead?

Everyone here that is anti TGT and TTS are just bitter. You will gain lots of exposure and experience. Is it purely a tech operation no, but it is not what everyone is telling you it is either. They are probably stuck in some dark business hole of TTS.

Decide for yourself, don't listen to a bunch of armchair career counselors.

2yck, i don't like it here and am trying to help a young person make the right career choice. I've done that for a lot of people in my life, now is not the time to join Target or any other retailer.

2cjz - engineer actually. If you don't like it here go somewhere else. We have more than enough dead weight already.

OP, -2prv is just some HR or Group Manager hack that is towing company line. They are scared shitl*ss that they can no longer hire anyone at Target and hoping you are gullible enough. For every Engineer they find, two probably left. Go find a real tech job and forget Target, there are plenty of jobs for your skills.

I guarantee you'll have a good time as a TLP and Target looks great on a resume. You'll get to experience several different teams for a few months each and then get some say where you end up afterwards. Anyone saying there's no innovation is not paying attention or too dense to know.

Pros:

  • The perception that you are working for a $70Bn Revenue Retail leader

  • You get paid to gather some experience

  • After two years you can move somewhere else

Cons:

  • No technology innovation at TGT

  • There is no such leadership at TGT, or TTS or Merchandising or anywhere. Only morons in Leadership positions.

  • Half your paycheck will evaporate buying Starbucks or having lunch and HH at Nicollet Mall restaurants and bars just because that's what you do at TGT.

  • You will be appraised by pure perception rather than your real contributions and hard work.

  • What the last poster posted is totally true.

Go to the Nerdery or get a great Tech Internship program at UnitedHealth, Boston Consulting Group, IBM, Google, Microsoft or GE Digital. Retail is not great to begin with, and Target is not the best.

run away. TTS is mocked by most other MSP based company's IT Teams. No one with real talent would work there. they are 2-3 years behind on any real innovation. Leadership has caused this gridlock for 10+ years. The lead architects and engineers don't help either. They are often full of crap and lack strategic vision and any useful technical skills. For years, working in TTS in MSP was sold as some prestigious privilege. It isn't, they will hold anyone with a bright future back. If you are great at kissing ass and hate doing work, TTS is the right place for you to thrive!

I would have to agree with a couple of the others on this one. Coming in young and early in your career as a TLP would set you up for great experience. You will get some broad exposure to many areas and TTS really is trying to do the right thing. If it doesn't work out after 2 or 3 years, you will have some great skills to take with you. I have been in TTS for over 10 years. It's not that great for someone who is in the middle of their career, but starting out you will get some good experience.

Target is not a tech company. They are a retailer. Go elsewhere.

Why in the world would any smart, young and likely technically competent individual even consider joining the mess in TTS. You will not be creating awesome software and products, you will be stuck supporting run down and poorly designed / built technologies. We have been told our primary function is run state stability (yawn). They will never put a TLP on high visibility and company critical projects. Plus, 90% of your potential coworkers hate their jobs and would drag you down. Go somewhere exciting and enjoy work. Retail is a bad choice.

Coming in as a TLP right now isn't a bad idea.

The hate for TTS is due to old scar tissue built up over years of terrible "leadership" and from all the people who have been here forever and don't want to learn anything new. We're in the middle of turning this huge ship now that we have an actual CIO who understands technology calling for change. Coming in as a TLP will give you preferential treatment and projects. It's the best way to get your foot in the door.
