Instead of a mass layoff this year, Target is changing titles and paygrades. This will seem like a demotion for many and lots will leave on their own. So need to lay off employees and give them severance. Bain FTW!

I can tell you from the lower level employees standpoint at target that we continue to lose more and more as time goes on. We hit the point at our d.c where they cant cut anymore positions and still get work done so instead they figure out how to cut costs everywhere else. They've cut how much time off we are allowed to accrue, made our healthcare they offer into a joke. Restructured pay grade progression so it takes a year longer to make max rate as a progression scale employee. They tell us they want us to take time off, and then deny the time off frequently. In our state, if you left employment with the company you were paid out unused vacation time and that's been eliminated. Employees abusing family medical leave act will show up to work one to two days a week and nothing is said or done about it as they are "untouchable". meanwhile someone who misses four days a year sick is talked to about it in reviews and warned they need to work on attendance. They hammer long term employees trying to get them out to hire new lower pay replacements so they can save money for 3 yrs on payroll. This while having people fresh outta school put in roles of leadership that wont step up to fix problems or give feedback to problem performers. The hits just keep on coming at all levels it seems.
Where do the stock options fit in?
4twc: Amen..... It's really not a conspiracy, it's the new reality. Also, let's be real here: Someone's ability or lack there of to get promoted is really their issue. If you don't/can't get what you want here go somewhere else.
These changes are industry standard. Titles aren't changing downward. Pay is the same with wider bands like every other company. HR is just catching up to every company. Amazon has 9 levels. Just look around.
I thought this was not coming down the pipeline until all reviews are given. I was told each layer of the 10 will trickle down with announcements of the new titles. Maybe i misunderstood, but i thought the catch with this is that your boss has an opportunity to give you a merit increase throughout the year, with really no formal reviews. You could go over a year without a raise.
This is why Bernie Sanders is so popular now. People think they deserve what someone else worked their ass off to attain. Worked out well for USSR, Venezuela, Cuba, etc.
@1nmb, good point. Remember the leftist furor when they found out Tgt contributed $$ to conservative campaigns. Was brutal, now they cower to the left....I hate what America is becoming.
Hey, this is the American culture destroyed and cultivated by another liberal leaning company. Everyone gets a participation trophy, welcome to socialism brought to you by Target.
What the hell is HR thinking?!! Are they trying to get what good people are left to leave?? What incentive is anyone going to have if everyone is treated the same!
@1apw That's the thing, there won't be any more promotions. Or barely any. Everyone will have the same title within a job type. There won't be subdivisions. On top of that the review scores are moving to a 3 point scale. THREE POINTS. So literally everyone will have the same title with a review score of 2. I'm looking forward to it personally. It means I don't have to do any more work. Just show up, put in absolute minimum effort, and collect my paycheck at the end of the week. Thanks Target!
When JK said in an e-mail specifically that base wages won't decrease, but no other information, it makes me wonder what the catch is. There's always a catch with Target. They will never just do something that genuinely benefits the team... Just something that gives the illusion and PR material of benefits.
If this new program was so great and beneficial to target and team, they would have waited 9 Mos to roll it out. Some lawyers in HR dreamed it up to screw you all over...again and again.
I'd prefer the layoff. The work environment is mentally toxic now that the GTKY crowd has come back out of hiding.
Get over your 'Title Envy' and enjoy the wider pay range =not every change is about Target trying to screw you over.
but titles DO mean something to many people. what's the point of being promoted if your title stays the same as your peers who aren't as ambitious?
From what I've heard titles will have much less meaning but your direct management will have much more input into your pay and incentives, instead of needing director and even VP approval for everything. That means much less promotions but you'll be paid better, assuming you aren't a deadbeat. It's a trade-off but we'll have to see how it goes.
According to BC this is all the brainchild of our newly appointed HR chief. According to her she us all about team, so it has to be fabulous for all us workers.
I meant to say 'no need to lay off..."
