In the 1980s IBM had 200,000 people in the USA... Today, less than 70,000 people work at IBM. Layoffs, attrition, neglect, strategic shifting, all of that took a toll on the US worker. And we did buy PwC and tens of thousands of consultants in the US as well (had that not happen things would be much worse) - now you go and figure what's going to happen in next 10 years
