Got google offer. Move to bay area or stay in san diego? ....

What are the good and bad things about both options?

Strongly feel that this is a bogus question as I do not think that the OP has an offer at GOOGL and is just trying to troll here.

I am working at one of the more hardware specific divisions at Alphabet and I have worked in the past at QCOM. There was a start-up in the middle, but unlike most posters I am actually grateful to QCOM and I think I may have spent time there during a phase where there was actually useful learning.

Some of the responses here are true. If you think it is tough to get promoted beyond senior staff at QCOM, wait till you come to GOOGL. Forget promotion, the hiring manager will subtly indicate that - even at the interview. And it is not always easy to report to people 10 years younger than you, since I am in my late-40s now and have family responsibilities. Politics as one poster has said, you will find is as bad as QC. The arrogance and not invented here attitude is much worse than QC. And frankly - most people sadly, are way over-qualified for the job they do.

Regarding real estate, if you have a family still better to buy a house in the 1.3-1.5M range in the nicer parts of San Jose (which itself is a very large city with many varying subdivisions) or Fremont which are the last affordable suburbs worth living here. You can still get a 10 year jumbo arm at 3.125% as of now. The apartments tend to be absolutely cr*p with bad schools nearby to boot. Anyway, I got a place when I was in the start-up 4 years ago and prices were more manageble then.

You're an idiot if you can't figure this out by yourself. Why the Phuk did u interview if you don't want to quit? Post your name so Google can rescind the offer and your Qualcomm manager can fire you for incompetence.

Also, look for condos for rent. They tend to have better insulation--and the ones with fireplaces have dead space between the walls that kills the worst of the noise. Also, washer-dryer hookups in the unit or garage are a godsend!

Don't worry you will not turn gay, but you may be celibate for a while. You need to provided more details for a better answer.

San Jose here. I have yet to travel that far West.

It's definitely about 10 degrees colder or more. Chose an apartment that was within walking distance.

I'm observing what I would call "rent compression": I.E. The apartments that haven't been burned to the ground yet are going for $1,800 (yeah, people are still renting the roach motels) and the really nice ones can be found at $2,200 to $2,400.

I'm thinking I'll be completely screwed when the massive Samsung building fills up on Tasman...three blocks away.

Don't rent without checking yelp.

Bay area costs too much. I don't care how much more Google or Apple is willing to pay. The extra property tax, traffic, and housing rates isn't worth it for an old house. Let's not mention all the nerds in the area and the lack of hot chicks.

On the plus side: You have more opportunities, salaries and bonuses tend to be better for those who work hard, and there tends to be more diversity in recreational activities, culture--even restaurants.

On the minus side: It's expensive--at least 15-25% more per year. A decent 2 BR apt. close to work will run over $3,000. A decent 2 BR condo will start at $900,000. The lack of females is exaggerated. They are there; they just work 60-80 hrs. per week so you rarely see the ones outside of the workplace--and it's rarely a good idea to date coworkers.

If you are single, go with Google, anyhow. There's a lot more future with that company--regardless of your area of specialization. If you are older or married, be warned: Google can be just as political as QC, they work your ass off after the "honeymoon"--just like QC, and there is an inherent bias against older workers in some departments.

If you cant figure it out for yourself, look at what others have done. How many G people moved to Q vs how many moved from Q to G (if they could). You'll get paid more, do more relevant work, work with better people, get free food and incredible benefits @ G. whywait?

Over the hill toward Santa Cruz has a real summer. Some great outdoor activities in the area.

Bring your own woman. If she dresses nicely, wears makeup, short shorts or a bikini, enjoy that while you can until she gets beaten into not doing it any more by the other women.
