Good pay and benefits (and yes, while I ended my career as an STL, I started as a part-time team member). Good career advancement opportunities Good vision and values Good work environment While corporate, it is still a highly decentralized company and there is still opportunity to make a mark on the job you're doing

Cons

Inconsistent execution and dedication to the core values by middle and upper leadership Sometimes focus too much on fluff (iPads in shopping carts, most aspects of the HSH program, fancy tech and certain aspects of new store décor) and not enough on basics (training, service, pricing) Favoritism (which could be true of any company this size) John Mackey, while brilliant, is too checked out of day to day operations and there's a lot of stuff that happens that is 180 degrees opposed to his "conscious leadership" views that he's likely completely unaware of. The decentralized nature of the company also sometimes means a lot of reinventing of the wheel and tends to promote a "sink or swim" mentality to getting trained

Advice to Management

You've taken a beating recently in the press (which then led to a financial one). Service and high standards have long been what kept WFM in the lead. Don't forget that while trying to climb out of the whole. Cutting service, eliminating thousands of jobs (many of which were knowledgeable, long term, hard-working TMs) isn't the answer, at least not for the long term. Go back to the core values, strip away all that doesn't support that and just focus on the basics. If John and Walter are just going to focus on the big picture and have very little contact or knowledge of operations, I think they need stronger leaders below them to ensure the company upholds its standards of "conscious leadership"; there's too much "do as I say, not as I do" going on and too many leaders who motivate by fear and control rather than inspiring others.

It's childish to think everyone in leadership are lazy bullies, but I've had the displeasure of working for her (SS), she IS a lazy bully, and stupid.

hey regional bosses, here's a tip: any STL that misses inventory does so because they don't understand the process and want to blame someone else (ASTL, TL) if it goes poorly.

ALL STLs should be required to be at their stores until inventory is complete, and all the numbers signed off on.

SW has a bunch of STLs that run for the hills.

I'm sure Steph cries herself to sleep these days, she was always so quick to brag about herself to anyone foolish enough to listen including the media. Ego plus entitlement minus ethics and intelligence equel a calamity.

She's ruined a lot of careers, lost WFM untold amounts of profits, all to further her personal agendas, she's toxic, everyone knows.

At least Austin has finally gotten rid of their Steph infection. Steph Steele stood for everything this post is against! She ran her clubhouses on pure nepotism. Stole from the company to give to herself. GOOD RIDDANCE. Not to mention the obvious incompetence, I'm surprised it took so long to notice.WFM deserves a refund of her wages.

I would almost assume, based on the timing of this post, that it was written by her, but even she couldn't be so obnoxiously unselfaware, even with her Austism.

She has ruined everything she touched, she is a blight.

kudos for getting rid of her, it's just too bad it took so long.

This should be printed on a poster and handed to the crisis team. Afterall, a great perspective from an ex-STL standpoint. Things will not change, but our customer base has already changed. They will still believe in themselves and their layers and layers of management. Who cares they have just won a Billion Dollar lottery (the stock buy back) They pendulum swings toward debt! Soon we gonna need another billion!

You were pretty generous. The reality is that the company's disorganization, decentralization and arbitrary decisions made in the regional hierarchies have created a nightmarish work environment. The concept of "conscious leadership" was invented after the fact in order to cover for a completely hierarchical, arbitrary approach to decision-making in which blame is passed down. Reinventing the wheel, nepotism, constant errors and mistakes, and lack of accountability for those mistakes creates a stressful atmosphere where we are rushed into doing something highly time-consuming and disruptive (like shifting entire categories of products from one team to another) only to later reverse course. Again, no one is held accountable. In fact, you should go back and add that the very reason we're permanently branded "Whole Paycheck" is that the regions were allowed to charge as much as they wanted without considering the negative effect of this on the company's brand image. Now it's damaged goods. You should also point out the unbelievably crappy and incompatible technologies under which products are listed, ordered, sold and inventoried.
