robotics (UCSD has a big robotics initiative launched. Irwin's a backer)
bio / electrical interfaces
space (e.g. move up to LA and join SpaceX and work for Elon)
AI
I don't know if there is much in these fields in SD (maybe Brain corporation (AI))

Did you make any connections while you were at Qualcomm or in life? I have been introducing people from Qualcomm that I know and trust ethically and intellectually to local SD start ups started by or employing people I trust ethically and intellectually when I think there might be a match.
Can't spell biotech without IoT. First we need the social media bubble to collapse. Then people will start working on real things that benefit humanity -- instead of "uber for dildos", etc straight outta SF, funded by easy credit chasing unicorns
