Plenty of time talented folks were let go in favor of keeping brown nosers. If you're competent and do your job well, and someone else is marginal but better at buttering up middle management, guess who's getting the pink slip? I've seen this happen at least three times--where folks I knew who were darn good at their jobs were let go and oxygen wasters were kept on.

Brown nosers win the popularity contest with management.... they are letting go of great talent. It's sad to watch....
This is sooooo very true. It was a popularity contest to keep your job.
Agreed. Been here over 5+ years and seen much great talent get let go. Most of them were back working for VMW within weeks or days and they are all still successful here.
