Because you are part of a boom and bust industry, and SWN did not take the proper steps to adjust to the "new normal" of the domestic natural gas producing market when prices turned a couple of years back. Part of the reason the layoff was so drastic this time was that no actions were taken previously.
Did you notice how the stock price jumped the day BEFORE the layoffs? Looks like the execs did a little V+ for themselves.
