And still people are worried about losing their job. What did you do all year to improve your situation? Save more? Cut expenses? Found a new job? Sell your house? Sell your car for a more reasonable grocery getter? Nothing?

If schlumberger had not overpaid for Saxon, some jobs would have been saved. After the purchase I knew that guys at SLB were not the sharpest tools in the shed.
Got another job. Best thing I ever did. Left oil altogether.
When you only make 20k per year it is hard to support a family.
i saved 90% of my money staying at the rig and working as much as I could. I was single as well. I could not understand when people told me they lived from paycheque to paycheque. I've thought they were crazy buying stupid stuff or their wives were going nuts at home spending every penny on insignificant things. And all this was not new. It is not first time lay off, it happens every 5-7 years. I was mentored by senior guys who told me to save everything I could and don't get married as most of them were divorced or married bunch of times paying supports for everyone.
Most people do not make as much money as you guys do! Coming from a very poor family, I know what it is like to not have even the necessities. It is hard to save what you do not make... You should be grateful for what you have! It is wise to save 10% of every check and live with in your means. What is concerning is that if we are laid of we will not have income to support families... And despite what people say, there is not much out there. And what is out there will pay you pennies on the dollar. Lets hope Schlumberger does not have to lay any one else off...
I am sitting on pile of cash deciding what business to open. Took some crappy job as my oilfield skills are not applicable to real world. I can't understand how people surviving and paying mortgages on everage wage. Getting married.
Paid down debt. Trying to conserve cash (6-8 months living expenses). This year's Christmas budget will be a lot less than last year's. And while the stock market isn't safe or predictable, trying to set aside some $$ in an investment account to see if I can grow it. Trying to think of a scenario where I can become my own boss. I know that loyalty has been dead for a long time, but the past year has really driven that point home for me. Do not rely on Mother Schlumberger.... and always have an exit strategy.
I learned how to speak Punjab.
I feel sorry for those who live from pay check to pay check...
