Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Folks in their 50s, get ready to leave!!

Guys, another ISP is round the corner and the chances of it hitting folks in 50+ age group is pretty high.. Sorry to say, but the productivity of older employees is just a fraction of what an intern would deliver.. You can come up with all sorts of arguments, but the ground reality is that older folks have lost their charm and are no longer interesting to be employed.. Hence, be prepared to get out or you will be kicked out..

Why is there a misconception that all employees at Intel are engineers. I know of several who are at grade 9 and above and have degree in Arts instead of engineering. All these people are good at talking and tooting their horns constantly. And to be successful at Intel you just have to toot you horn engrs and non engrs alike. The more noise and drama you create the higher up you move!

Intel enjoys many years of high profit margin on pc business. For the same project, intel can afford 3 or 5 times of people than other company. This results very low productivity in very corner of intel. For example, Intel routinely failed on any new business without exception. If the new business is not dominated by intel, this business will fail under intel management. As profit margin shrinks, intel can on longer afford this. Productivity improvement is required. Since intel is managed as mass production factory, knowledge and skill of aged engineer is no different from the RCG from management point of view, these engineers will be targeted for cost reduction. The deadwood and knowhow people are throw out of door. Only the RCG is left, they work very hard to do academic work and fail compete in new business.

I like the thought. Isp for ssl1,2,4 &5. Clear out slackers and suck ups ib equal measure. I would think intel is better with more who prefer engineering work over .ppt and verbal jousting.

BK is going to be at the top of the high 20% metric. This might be good!

Unfortunately, the last Intel ISP did very little to get rid of these old deadwood. What Intel needs to do next is to target all employees either in the top or bottom 20% of their pay range. Being in the top 20% means that you are overpaid based on your contribution, and being in the bottom 20% means that you are not keeping up with peers in your pay grade. This type of ISP would be objective and apply to all pay grades so no discrimination claims can be made.

Intel needs a big Carl Icahn purchase and shakeup - get the real deadwood out!

Intel is the deadwood at Intel. The decisions of Sr. Management is where the deadwood starts.

Deadwood applies to anybody, any age, who is an engr at Intel who does not earn their pay. Unfortunately, Focals and ISP is the only way to purge these folks out.

Very true. These comments are re-iterating that there is lot of deadwood in intel and they are doing the right thing by finding and removing such people.

Trolling is probably just outsourced by Intel HR - they're too busy right now preparing for annual firings. Whoever is doing it really sucks at it - I've seen much better.

People in their 50s can still be valuable to Intel IF their compensation justifies it. I know of many Intel lifers (grade 8+) who are just cruising and gaming the Focal system for 20+ years but provide very little contribution.

wow you guys are really screwed up. Do you really think that just because someone is in their 50's that they suddenly lose their minds? That they enter their 50's and then just sit around staring at the walls? I guess you don't realize that all the innovation that has gone on over the years was from these same people. I'm not saying that younger people don't have fresh new ideas but to just dismiss people because of their age is really narrow minded. Good luck to all you kids when you hit 40 and 50, when you have families and kids to put through college and then get told "bye see you have a good life". You are all in for a rude awakening if this is your attitude. I'm not putting down anybody on race because one thing I know from working at Intel is that most (not all but most) of the whites, Indians, Asians, Blacks etc that I worked with over the years are very bright hard working people.

197164 - Did it collapse due to hiring Indians? Why just one company? Were they hired to repair cars at Motorola - I am pretty sure Motorola was not manufacturing any cars.. Your response appears to be frustrated one showing signs of your mind getting retarded.. Go consult a psychiatrist - If you don't know what that is, it is a doctor specialized in an area of medicine that can help retards like you..

I think the biggest argument against turning 50+ yr olds into corporate Soylent green is to look at what SUCCESSFUL companies are going. Those companies that are making record profits whose stock is hitting all time highs - do they try to bolster their profits by firing people? Or rather do they try get every ounce of knowledge and skills out of those older workers until they retire? It's the latter!

197012 your speculation is highly faulty. All you have to do is look at. Motorola they had diversity hiring and they collapsed. This is not new. They hired many Indians and collapsed they don't know how to do basic home repairs or car repair they lack basic knowledge

The other part of the formula for 50+ people are their higher incomes. Unless those older folks are willing to take pay cuts, Intel has a valid reason for letting those folks go.

The theory of the original post: "the productivity of older employees is just a fraction of what an intern would deliver". This is a theory of the 19th century age of industrialization which treats people like machines. This theory and mode of operation worked without globalization and without capital flows across boarders. Today, in the 21st century with a high degree of globalization and competition tremendous success is based on creativity and innovation. And Innovation is not ageist - it doesn't care if you're 90 or 19. So to say that older employees are less productive is simply to miss the point. Yes, maybe we don't want them in a manual labor job lifting 80 lb carcasses of beef. How many of those jobs are there at Intel? Why don't you provide data that is meaningful to back up your point. For example what is the median age of patent holders at Intel? How does this compare with the Intel employee population? Try using that old Intel skill and lets hear some data instead of this ridiculous hyperbole!

That is just like saying "Its flood after me".. In fact, the biggest losers everywhere are the whites and not Indians, who keep replacing the whites. Has any company gone bankrupt by following this trend? Hello no. In fact, their profits have always gone up. So, think who the actual losers are.

Layoffs until this company collapses. This is the future for Intel. Slow death. All Indians will be deported.

That was too harsh.. Inclusion of other communities will only make the company better, as new thoughts and ideas will start pouring in. And who knows, they might come up with a 10x faster CPU

Yep, kids under 18, the mentally retarded, and the blind have also been under-represented at Intel. Time to give them a shot at turning the company around.

Though late, intel has realized that it needs more blacks, asians and non-whites (preferably females) to develop the next big thing.. These whites have been around of all the decades without any kind of innovation. This causing the company to die off gradually.. Now, give opportunity to others and let them change the world with their innovation. Whites are no more needed at intel.. Period.

And non-diversity folks (white, southeast Asian males), please be prepared to leave. Intel needs to achieve the 40% diversity quota.
