Worked at Intel in the 90's... Used to call college folk NCGs (new college grads) Came up with this acronym for Intel NCGs = Imbeciles needing to experience life need constant guidance. Still true today!!

I have been working for intel for 13 years and I have seen it all.. Early days 13 years ago it was the Chinese hiring Chinese, Indians hiring Indians and Vietnamese hiring Vietnamese. NOW ALL of them work together and complain about each other to me as I am Not Indian, Chinese or Vietnamese so I am the referee to explain to each group what they do here is not polite to the other group such as yelling and scolding a Chinese in front of others is not OK in Mainland China (do it privately). Many of these people do not Hang Out with each other due to they speak another language then them and tend to feel more comfortable with each other. I will be taking the ERP in June 2016 and wish ALL Intel workers the Best and it is Out with the Old (over 40 nowadays) and IN with the NEW hires.

Moore's Law every 2.5 years at Intel the number of transistors will double in the same area, but each

year we will lay off 5% for poor performance, and turnover with new people, so every 15 years 100% of the workforce will be replaced with new people and this will keep costs down.

I have been an employee of Intel for 17 years and been through quite a few of these but this time they offer the "Enhanced Retirement" package but when you look at it, it's only for the management that they want out. I'm a technician and it's basically impossible for me to get this particular package...You have to be offered it!!!

"these guys are just chained to their employer), have lower expectations on promotions and pay due to their visa status"

There is a different dynamic that I forgot to mention. Coming to this country at an adult age, most of the Indians are socially clueless when navigating their corporate careers. The cultural clues that one has to drop and pick up in social settings in order to advance careers with the called "soft skills" are usually missing in them. The way they make up for this handicap is by slogging harder - longer hours, never challenging stupid decisions, being yes men to their bosses.

As an Indian working at Intel for long, I can tell you that Indians managers are meaner towards their Indian subordinates. They know the culturally ingrained behaviors and weak points of Indians and exploit them to their advantage. I have an Indian manager who does not even so much as look at me in group meetings. More than Indian mentality, I'd say this is immigrant psychology. Immigrants are overly conscious to appear that they are not favoring their kind in a corporate setting.

The outnumbering Indian count you are seeing in engineer ranks observed by some attributes to a vast engineering college mushrooming phenomenon in India and the rise of middle class in India. Just as MBA, Med school, Investment Banking and Law School are professions of choice for smart kids in the USA, engineering is the middle class Indians' ticket to upper middle class. When hiring from US population, Intel does not hire engineers from CMU, Northwestern and Georgia Tech for their lowly ant-like engineering jobs - they know that those kids do not come for low salaries and would not stay after hours; far more, these kids tend to be creative and refuse to be tied to Intel process millstones. So, Intel has a preference for hiring from local colleges like ASU, PSU, where a job at Intel is considered a fortune for life - in that sense, I observe that the RCGs who join Intel from local US population are usually smart kids who want to break out of their proper middle class status through a decent education and who can not afford MBA, med school or law school.

Consider these advantages for Intel in hiring Indians - work hard, culturally submissive, trainable, can not skip jobs once hired due to visa/work-permit regulations (It takes almost 7 years these days to get a green card, until which, these guys are just chained to their employer), have lower expectations on promotions and pay due to their visa status. Which employer does not love this kind of people? Given that a majority jobs at Intel require following rules like a minion and creativity is threatening to the establishment, people with these ingrained cultural mindsets are far more welcome at Intel.

I am not advocating for Indians, just explaining what goes into the overwhelmingly large India hires among engineering ranks.

I agree that indian managers are recruiting 99% indians only

Main reason : they are afraid as they cannot give pressure / cant get on call support 24X7 / weekends etc

may be some regulating authorities should consider checking all possibilities

let us wait and see after this election ; things may change

Very funny to see all the white guys complaining about racial discrimination.

when balcks complain about racial discrimination, the white guys will just brush it off by saying its just competency in free market doing it and nothing about race. but when it comes to them vs indians..its suddenly race. what happened to free markets, capitalism and survival of the fittest ?

I have seen many Indian managers with over 80% indian under his management..

Don't tell me it's NOT favoritism. I understand people tent to hire whoever looks like themselves

and share same culture background, but I don't see any boundary for those Indian manager

to favor Indian hires only...

Of course there are Indian managers who tries to be fair and have good technical and people skills,

but they are rare.

What are the chances that this layoff would affect interns who are yet to join their internship at intel in the summer. Would appreciate any folsom site specific comments as well.

I worked at Intel for over 17 year and left 2 years ago. I don't think interns need to worry about layoff if they already received an offer letter/offer for an internship. As far as getting an offer for a permanent position, Intel always hires RCG's-Recent College Grad's no matter what. They tend to increase there hire count of RCG's soon after a big layoff. That how they try to replace high paid employees with cheap labor. The problem is RCG will soon become experienced employees and start to earn a good salary. This is when you become a target for the next layoff. At this point surviving become very political and you need to know how to play the game by staying "under the radar".

"my daughter just got hired for an internship in supply chain for this summer. advice? level of worry? chances of hiring her after geaduation next spring?"

It's not a surprise that intel goes down if you have worked in intel for sometime with those stupid managers.

It is true Intel is yet again going to layoff folks at Intel, it has already started with management and then will hit the employees in the next week. Yes it will hit in Santa Clara too.

I would say this is not a good place to work if you are looking for new learning opportunities and promotions. The management is bias and only listen to their own network connection or "family members", no chance for any outsider. They just gave me ISP even I have improved quite a bit when i was given the IR due to the fact that I can't travel daily from SC to HF for family reason. Even after I started travel, at the end still get the ISP or WTF. Agreed that if you can go transfer somewhere before receiving the VSP or even ISP, just go, don't wait at all. Now I'm happy with my new job at a medical company. Good luck to those who suffers now at Intel.

Who knows what happens? It is a big company, they can layoff in massive anytime. Last year in 2015, they laid off massive people who are brilliant took VSP package and left. In my group, no one works and only one works is Indian guy that guy left due to manager and employee argument..

Intel has filled its engineering jobs with with people from countries

where in the 21st century they are still sh!tting in the streets.

Do you still wonder why the company depends on annual hushed-up layoff's

to meet stockholder expectations?

I am an Indian Intel employee and I would admit that the ratio of Indians vs other ethnic groups is high. However, that does not mean that there is any blatant favoritism or discrimination against whites or other ethnic groups. In the Indian high tech culture, working for companies like Intel or Qualcomm is highly pursued and admired.

You are blind if you think there are more whites than blacks in the NBA. But seriously, proportional to the general US population, the ratio of Indians at Intel is very high and much higher than any non-white group. There is no way to deny that fact.

First, you are blind if you think there are more Indian workers than white workers at Intel. Second, Intel is wrong to use race in hiring, history will not be kind. Don't use their misguided approach. Third, why are you still race-baiting this forum. Go to some Fox news driven site and rant your heart out (literally). Please leave.

To deny that race should not be an issue when discussing hiring at Intel is foolish, especially when Intel themselves have put it in the forefront. If the statistics of ethnic groups at Intel is ever published, it will be obvious which specific one dominates.

Being fired from Intel used to be purely a competency issue; now with Intel's ongoing disruption by ARM it is a competency or a company issue (do successful companies have annual firings?). I imagine firings/layoffs at AMD also started off as pure competency and gradually gained momentum until in the latest rounds they were simply the wholesale destruction of entire departments that could be most easily shut down or outsourced. Individual or company failings - yes; but firing is never a race issue, not large scale. On the topic of Trolls. Standard Troll tactics are "divide and conquer" and race is one of those dividing issues. Politics is divisive too, which I notice comes up here a lot also- I don't think that's a coincidence... smells trollish.

Being fired from Intel is a competency issue. And complaining about the fairness of the firing is an idiotic issue.

Being fired from Intel is not a white vs. non-white issue. Go back to your KKK meeting troll.

Who is this Ahole who keeps calling those who disagrees with him "trolls"? Regarding the race issue, just look around when you are in any Intel campus and tell me which ethnic group is dominant.

That's not true. Stop trolling this site trying to divide the people who legitimately post here. You should be ashamed. People of all races are getting fired because Intel is a bad company and getting worse. It's Intel that divides people by race - don't stoop to their level.

For white or Asian guys, yes, race matters when you are trying to get a job at Intel. Indians have a leg up on the rest of us since many hiring managers are Indians and mostly just hire their own.

Who cares what race someone is. Don't stoop to Intel's level (race quota system). Yes, Intel is a name brand for the resume, but use it quickly because the brand is fading. Have your exit plan in place when/if you take an Intel job

If you are a new college grad and are desperate to land any job, as most are, getting an offer from any established company like Intel is a great thing. Having Intel on your resume will open many doors later in your career. I know of many Intel interns and new hires who are Indians who are extremely happy to be working for Intel. This, however, sucks for non-Indians.

When a company is being disrupted, like Intel is with ARM, asking a site-specific question is a bit of a non sequitur. A better question would be: Is Intel the place that will let me grow in my career. And the answer is "No".

You should feel privileged to be working for one of the finest silicon valley companies. Pay should not be the most important criteria for your happiness at Intel. Just be proud that you made it through the tough selection process and are now an Intel employee.

curious to know about this too, I'm a new grad with an SC offer, but honestly their offer isn't very competitive, and HR stonewalled me trying to negotiate it... should I be worried?

I thought SC folks were better off with all the other opportunities out there. I actually don't understand why turnover is low there. FM or Hillsboro on the other hand I can imagine finding equivalent or better jobs might just not exist in your favourite field.

Working at Intel SC gets you an 8-12% of your salary geographic bonus, but new hires who recently moved to the Bay Area say that it does come close to offsetting the high rents needed to live here.

Run before they give you ISP. You can never come back as GB or BB. If you move before they hand you the pink slip you still have a chance to come back!! and the new hires make more than folks working 15+ years. In place like Folsom, new hires are getting 100k!!!

Q1, 2014 the ATTD group in SC were told to move either to Oregon or AZ and they were told they all qualified for VSP. The entire group took VSP package and that group has not yet recovered. They were a group of 10 highly skilled engineers. SC is high risk. I would move to another site if possible otherwise find another job i another company. It's just asking for it sticking around that site unless if you are BK or his gang.
