I heard that in a large california location there were layoffs last december in some departments. I don't want to say exactly, even though this is anonymous. A dozen to maybe a few dozen at most from various departments. It is hard to tell however, since a lot use laptops to work from home. Sometimes you don't see an employee for days or even weeks, and in that way it is hard to track to see what is going with any one individual unless you know them personally. In regard to those that use the work at home program, where they don't consistently show up each day. I think the program is not necessary, but that's how it works here. The thing I don't understand is why do I see all these people from India being brought in under the loophole in the work visa program. They aren't just using this program to bring in cheaper labor for the IT department, but for customer service area as well. Anything they touch that is technology related I think they can squeeze into this loophole. Granted they are educated and are working at more than minimum wage, but businesses save money in this way, because for some strange reason, they think they can't hire desperate workers in america that wouldn't mind working at lower wages. Parts of detroit and west virginia come to mind immediately, along with los angeles and most of florida. They also are outsourcing to the philippines I know for a fact. There is a larger discussion now of closing the borders for illegal immigrants. Just think what it will take to close this loophole in the work visa program that outsources from abroad. Not just that but you have people in the philippines working the phones or whatever other jobs they are processing that don't even need to come here. They stay there and make much less than any americans would. Again, this would make sense for a global corporation like ikea and many others, but this place does business only in america, that is what bothers me somewhat. Has anyone seen what is going on and thought about this? Yes, they aren't moving the whole company to another state or country, but this doesn't help the local or surrounding areas to be doing this. Not only that but everyone is suppose to be insured and those that aren't, the government pays for those that can't afford it. During the affordable healthcare debate, they all said that insurance companies would profit more with everyone being insured, so none of this makes sense to use the work visa program and to outsource and bring in more of a majority of outside workers than those living in any state or city in america, in my own view.
Quite a few people were let go in the first week of February, I suspect a lot more layoffs are coming.
This is a given, we always have layoffs in IT
