Thread regarding Schlumberger Ltd. layoffs

Do not worry about it... Worrying can not change any thing.

Don't misinterpret this–many excellent, well qualified, undeserving folks I have had the opportunity to work with have lost their jobs, However, after taking a big step back and looking at the big picture, I am not certain my decisions would be any different given the situation, There is a business to run, and at the end of the day, if it were your business that was going to go under without some tough decisions, I would vouch that your decisions would inevitably be the same as well. Focus on the job you've been assigned to do, not impending doom. I plan to check back on this site, as there are occasionally some good bits of information, however, worrying about the future you cannot control doesn't change anything, Have an exit strategy in the event something does happen, but until then, work as hard as you can. If you are the person who doesn't deserve to lose your position, then it is the company's loss for not recognizing that, and someone else somewhere will be able to capitalize on that fact.

I too have seen the talent go while incompetent managers maintain positions. SLB shareholders should be scared. The quality of work going around is poor. Hours are being cut to employees while their families suffer. I've never seen a manager say good job to someone without following it with a however... Look at all the experience people being laid off while they replace them with newer no experience employees. That will do the job for less.

Is it safe to say that you get what you pay for? That is probably why this company is having a hard time keeping contracts, or even acquiring new work.

Yes SLB is famous for laying off the most talented folks because they are a threat to the management. Sounds crazy but it is true. How can they shareholders sleep at all?

Common practice across the business in USA, get rid of people that are better than you.

Prevalent at SLB of course.

Used to be common practice to hire folks better to promote growth.

Many years at SLB and others.

Never knew anyone that left SLB and not in better situation soon.

I was a manager that was recently let go. I have had great reviews, and a signed letter of recommendation from my N+2. As it turns out my position just couldn't be justified now that they have cut funding for most of the new technologies. If it happens just remember that you are valued asset no matter what company you work for.

I agree with the main posting, and also agree with the others that followed. During tough times, most should understand a business has to do what it needs to do so it can survive. On the other hand, in my career I have noticed Mmgt using these times to take advantage of saving their own asses by letting people go they feel threatened by 1st. Not much one can do really other than that if you ever get in a Mmgt position, follow a different path than what your old bosses are guilty of. Set the tone....

What about the incompetent managers that have used this layoff as a tool to get rid of the talents to save their asses in the end? There is no investigation and in terms of business , are you shareholders happy with such practices?
