It can be an okay place to work (depending on department and role), but it is certainly not a a safe place. Don't expect a long tenure at the company unless luck is reliably on your side. They've rescinded accepted offers, even after the new hire had moved to the area and/or had given 2 weeks notice to previous organization. The fiscal year ends in January, layoffs may be timed in relation to that. See https://www.google.com/search?q=target+layoff+rescinded+offer

LOL, Gregg, you should think that, given the size of your golden parachute.

I can't name one engineering manager through VP in Corp systems that deserves to still have a job at Target. They are the worst, completely lost and definitely not leaders. Type of leaders you definitely would not put in charge of any key company initiatives. Will be curious to see BTS Pulse results, if we get to see them.

teaches of peaches nailed it. The one thing you want may take into consideration is working at TGT just for two or three years. It still looks great on a resume. Unless you are the GTKY coffee status type, be prepared for mediocre review scores even though you really do have significant accomplishments.

teaches of peaches - Totally agree with your statements. It is definitely a popularity contest there and I feel sorry for a lot of the brilliant introverted folks from Michigan Tech who get culled into Target only to find out years later they are simply a tool for those who lack the talent to propel themselves forward. I recall many of times asking a EC questions only to be referred to the on site vendor contractor they had. If the EC cannot answer the questions, why the title? Well the guy was a good bullshitter. Ultimately politics and the ability to navigate politics is what makes you successful. But for talented folks not looking to run for senate or win the beauty pageant, its a no win situation.

If you don't like work but love having coffee statuses with peers and participating in meetings, you can get lost in Target very easily and never have problems for years while you quietly collect a paycheck.

If you require excellence of yourself, are well immersed in your own practice and loathe petty distractions, Target is not for you. You will never do anything remotely important. You will find yourself starved of any meaningful opportunities while your superiors ding you for not being as sociable as you could be. Terrible place for the introverted.

This isn't a judgement, this is a statement of fact. Target is a place designed for people who got along well socially in high school and generally maintain a practiced incuriousness about things, regardless of whether they have any raw talent or otherwise. It's not a place for eccentrics or intellectuals. Period full stop. The people who say otherwise are just paying lip service.

Are you thinking about an internal transfer, or joining the company from the outside? Either way - Target and especially TTS are a dangerous place to tie your future to. If I'm not mistaken, we've seen layoffs every year going back five or six years. To make matters worse, the absolute dearth of leadership and any semblance of clear strategy have left many gaping holes in where the division as a whole is going. Most importantly - remember that Corporate Systems and TTS isn't about "Technology" - it's about something much much different. It's about finding ways to keep the botched rollouts of application after application afloat. Literally 8,000 people who Fix what was Deployed Broken.

It pains me to say this but I have to agree with the people who would urge you not to take the position.

With very few exceptions, the vast majority of the management team is in way over their heads. The goals are completely undefined and no one knows what is going on. Which wouldn't be so bad if every single person around you wasn't willing to throw you under the bus to save their skins for one more day. More layoffs are planned for January and the method that they use to determine who gets the ax is inscrutable. We've lost so many great people and none of it makes sense.

Over the years TTS has seen some amazing talent, and some of them remain. But generally the talented and bright people have either left, are planning to leave, or are praying that they can make it to retirement.

Unless you're researching an article on incompetence, don't lower yourself to this place. Target, as a whole, is struggling in a very serious way - TTS is an absolute disaster. I sincerely hope we'll work it out but it is a long, ugly road to get there.

I would strongly advise against taking a job with Target. Several people who accepted jobs at this time last year got laid off in Jan (that's how poorly decisions are made here). Also, the top management has no clue how to make this company better, so they schedule meetings to tell you how great their decisions are and how wonderful Target is. Then you get home and turn on the news and see that despite hearing 'transformation' non-stop for a year, Target can't achieve a stable website to compete with the big boys, we have another data breach, and Target is buying back stock to offset the failure of the CEO to lead.

You'll either be firing someone for a management error or you'll be fired for a management error but hey, you get to dress for your day.

No. There is so much broken here that any involvement within it will only tarnish your reputation (by way of association), leaving you frustrated and desperate to escape somehow, even if it means simply resigning. This is a dead end, like TTS and most of Target. I hate what working in this environment has done to me. The turnover is astonishing, and the lack of any sort of coherent strategy is even more so. Save yourself, don't try to save Corp. Systems.

Depends. Do you want to come in in the middle of a transformation to help challenge the status quo and change the way things get done? Or are you looking for a boring job that doesn't require much work?
