Thread regarding Honeywell International Inc. layoffs

Been working at Hon for 13 years, have yet to experience a single layoff. We've had furloughs once before and it was not a surprise during the

recession in 2008. Demand is down for 2016, you can blame whoever you want for that but that's the reality. I'd rather see layoffs than the company go bankrupt. Cooporations exist to generate profit so I can't be mad about layoffs after 13 years of job security. The company has cut benefits every year for the last seven years and at this point nothing should be a surprise. I go into work everyday with the understanding each day might be the last. It's still a decent paying job and I'll probably stick around till I'm no longer needed and move on.

Dave Cote is a POS. He has a $900,000+ per month pension, despite the hundreds on millions he has already taken. What does you pension look like? South Bend's was stripped several years ago. He is garbage and running the company into the ground, so he can do what? Nobody could possibly need that much money. With any luck, he suffers an aneurysm or something. He does not deserve the air that he breathes. 16,000 US workers being laid off right now, yet stock is $104ish per share. Pure corporate greed, with no regard for it's employees!

I have worked for what is now Honeywell Aerospace, for 36 years. During my career I've survived about 5 'reductions in force'. I believe you must 'give a day's work for a day's pay', and that this is the reason I'm still around. I don't see Honeywell as a civic organization or even a patriotic one. It's a business, and thereby works to create profit for it's owners within the framework of applicable laws. This naturally entails pursuit of the best possible compromise of cost vs. productivity in their workforce. People who expect a company's 'loyalty' or other indulgence don't see their employment for what it is: a business transaction.

Honeywell Aerospace has been aggressively moving engineering jobs to India and China; moving manufacturing to Indonesia; moving testing to Mexico. If they can pay employees pennies on the dollar somewhere else in the world ... if they can avoid providing benefits (like basic health insurance) somewhere else in the world ... if they can claim that they can't find qualified Americans as an excuse to bring in foreign nationals (to be trained by qualified Americans) ... they will. Honeywell considers the United States a high cost center. They are moving as much work as they can to low cost centers. That means furloughs and layoffs for Americans.

Grease Monkey,

I can attest that valuable employees do get laid off. There technical specialists that were lost in the last 8 years through RIFs and "encouraged retirement" (changing health benefits to encourage it) and the knowledge that was lost has definitely set programs back.

Your continuing to work at Honeywell only further feeds the DC piggy bank. Dave reports to the board and the share holders not the associates like you and me. If you are unhappy with his comp structure you can impact it by:

  1. Taking your skills and talents elsewhere.

  2. If enough of your peers follow (and your HR team finds their spine) the message of excessive unfavorable attrition could make its way to the board. Otherwise the lack of performance will show up in unhappy customers

  3. Become Dave's Boss

  4. Dave's works for the board and share holders. Buy shares and become an active investor or join a group that will assist your agenda.

I am not saying you SHOULD leave or Dave is wrong. I believe there are too many employees (and people in general) that are unhappy but unwilling to do something to be happy.

Good luck in taking on the machine!

I've worked here while there have been layoffs, yes; I have not personally been layed off. Those who I have worked with directly that have been affected by layoffs in my experience were not victims, they were underperformers who by my account did not deserve a job due to their attitude or poor job performance and believe me there are still plenty of them. Some are simply working in the wrong position at the wrong time. I am a hard worker and feel I have been treated fairly for the most part. I know plenty of people at other aerospace companies in AZ who have not been given the same opportunities that I have received at Honeywell. As for DC and his pay and the pay of other CEO's I agree it's a major issue which is why I no longer voluntarily invest in the stock market or this company.

Companies exist because of the hard work and dedication of their employees. Dave Côte obviously doesn't understand this, with his 50 million dollar salary and bonuses. He takes from these employees to fatten his own nest egg

I don't disagree with the points of the first person regarding layoffs vs bankruptcy, etc except that I don't know what you mean by you "haven't experienced layoffs." There have been lay offs (called "RIF" called, "Staff Reduction" whatever you want) while you have been there so maybe you just meant you personally have not been laid off. It is worth noting that the softness seen in Aero is in part due to the "fix then cut and allow to brake" that the customers feel either because of the approach to process improvement or because of the continuous farming out of critical processes (either business process or mfg process).

I respond to be an encouragement to either be happy where you are or look outside the company. I am no longer with Honeywell and am thrilled I was shown the door. Outside of Honeywell in the last few months I have found:

Better retirement matching programs

Bonus structure for entry level salary team (ie, band 3)

Higher salaries for supervisors

OT for professional staff supporting production

I am blessed to have found a great opportunity.

Honeywell is an open door. Come and go as you like, but don't get lulled into the idea that pretty much all other companies are run the same way. Polish your resume and vote with your feet if you don't like it. Or band together and buy shares. You can make a difference either way.

Hope you get laid off. After 13 years you say you never experienced a layoff. That's a joke I was there alot longer and went through many layoffs....you need a taste of reality.

OK, fair enough. It's called Capitalism. But, how do you explain the double-digit pay increase percents when it comes to executives. Some of the C-Level folks tripled their take-home pay over last five years. I get the supply/demand side of the equitation, but I also refuse to silently accept the fact that a handful of folks are using this PUBLIC company for their personal gain while the rest of us watch our share of the pie progressively shrink.
