Were they affected in the recent layoffsby intel? How's the work culture compared to other giant companies in the mobile computing space?

Hard to say, OP. My guess is if they want you bad enough and you have some sha-bang skill that they are lacking that they're having a hard time finding... then I'd guess you very well could negotiate and win. But if you're just a run of th mill whatever else they have a lot of and your skillset isn't knock your socks off impressive... then I'm thinking you'll need to take what they offer.
OP here. Thank you all. I appreciate the replies. I would prefer a smaller company like xilinx myself than a giant like Intel. Unfortunately xilinx isn't paying me as well in San Jose compared to Intel in Austin.
Austin has a lot of other companies too. Might not be as big as the valley but still plenty of semiconductor companies.
Does intel negotiate salaries??

I agree with you, 139685. If I had a smaller company with a start-up feel option I'd have been ALL over that and left Intel even before I was eligible to retire (didn't want to leave the SERMA behind which is $1500 for every 1 full year of service to be used for medical). I find Intel a very frustrating place to work and don't even get me started about some of the NASTY mean personalities there. I can't wait to leave. I'm counting down now. lol
If the job offers are similar then decide based on your impression of the people and the lifestyle of the area. Both have much to offer. As an older laid off worker who was a company man and got suckered into sacrificing much of my personal life in favor of work and work stress only to be fired after several decades of devoted service I advise you to remember jobs and careers will end. Wherever you go keep that in mind and be prepared for the moment HR comes with some minor pretense to fire you and dare you to sue. I think today I would pick smaller firms with a heart over large firms pretending to have a heart until your Healthcare costs ir demographic strikes them as wrong for the moment. Texas is the better state for divorce so if you pick intel and do get sucker into the live to work mindset that is a plus.
I've worked at Intel over 15 years. I know nothing about Austin though so can't comment on that, only working @ Intel. I'm also poster 139257 (2nd from bottom). Just a guess that you won't like it here either. Yes pay and benefits are good but it's a difficult place to work (in my opinion and a lot of people's opinions that I know). People say that they are wearing golden handcuffs. ($$ makes it hard to leave even though it's rough here). For me? I literally wanted out my first day (I kid you not). It was EXTREMELY rough but it was the best paying job I'd be able to find where I live so stuck with it. However, I planned on getting out the moment I was eligible to retire. That time came a few months back and while I could do it, the timing isn't quite right in my personal life so I'm sticking with it for another year, or until I can't stand it a moment longer.
Look at state taxes and expense, too. If you can get out of electronics, do it. It is being offshored.
OP Here. That isn't a pretentious question. And I wanted to know an honest opinion about Intel Austin. I also have other offers like xilinx in San Jose. So I'm a little confused so changing a job is a life changing decision. I'm not unemployed but simply not happy with my current job.

So you just got a job offer from a company that just fired a lot of people who then came here to commiserate with each other. If any one tells you not to accept, would you listen? What do you really want to know?
Along with good pay and benefits at 139127 mentioned... just be aware that Austin is a small site and sometimes Intel decides to close smaller sites down. Or it could remain open but your business group decides to do site consolidations meaning they could redeploy their employees at any sites with fewer than X# of people. Then again, they could also offer you a job if you moved to Oregon or some other site they have a lot of people at (if they are shutting down a site or doing site consoliations). If it was me I wouldn't worry about it and take the job. Nothing is ever guaranteed in life except death and taxes. :)
