How's farming as profession? Got any stories? How much money can you make? Need a break from tech.

Big diff between farm for family and extra/cheap food if you already have some cash and trying to completely support your family. Growing your own food is a great way to save $$$ so the cash goes much further. Still not easy work.

Farming is not a profession, it's a lifestyle choice. Unless you want to work for Big Ag. for slave wages, you'll need quite a few millions to buy fertile ag. land, equipment, and hire a labor force which you can control and rely on, before you can enjoy your new existence. With a Q/STEM background, I'd say, not a chance in your lifetime to make a decent living, as you know it, in that field!

It's even better than Qualcomm because the H1B workers require no paperwork and they disappear into the night once the crop is picked!!!

It's all about (1) the right crop; (2) establishing reliable channels of distribution; (3) access to enough naturally occurring water which is problematic in CA, because it's too expensive to just turn the hose on crops when it doesn't rain for months. (4) Willingness to work 90+ hours per week.

Maybe you should try growing marijuana. It is very lucrative. Soon, California will join Colorado and Oregon in legalizing pot.

Yeah I've heard that growing mushrooms can be pretty lucrative. Also there's some kind of weed...

Success in farming is all about picking the right crop and getting a path to the market. It isn't about picking your own crop. I know a guy who made millions with a local nursery growing flowers and strawberries, another who grows mushrooms.

Yes, as a farmer, you won’t be trapped in a cubicle, but you did not have to go to college to be a farmer. Maybe you can become a cowboy. You should be glad that you were not a lawyer. Most lawyers hate their work, but love the money. What a dilemma?

Imagine working in your yard, mowing lawn trimming trees, etc, and then imagine doing that everyday at 10 times the pace. That is farming. Or, go to one of those self-pick orchards, and pick fruit for 8 hours straight. This is exactly what farmers do. You will be begging for you old tech job.
