It is possible that Renee James gave weight to employee loyalty and may not have agreed to the cockamamie reason used for layoff. Most employees dont want challenge SL 4/5 stock level, because INTC has been licking the bottom for long, did not want get to his/her manager's bad side and the manager's when questioned gave BS- saying most people got the same stock levels. Even immediate managers may not have had a clue that HR and top management was setting some people who they want to get rid off on citing some reasons despite employee being successful and with no slips in performance. The classic development plan need that Intel uses is " X needs to improve communication skills and then the employee will be asked to take few classes like presentation skills etc. But problem here is some people have communication disability- it is recognized disability, but companies like Intel uses that disability as performance issue, if they want to get rid of you.In all these focals employee in question does well on his job and no slip ups but management will try coming up with something with no basis and just mis-perceptions to use it against the employee at the opportune time. So they can hire a younger employee at lower pay level. But Intel wastes billions due top management's failures and screw up and misadventures and then reward themselves and glorify themselves as "risk takers" etc. Intel is no longer what it used to be 10 years ago.
I think she was forced to leave. She had nothing lined up so she agreed to stay back until the end of the year. She has a better chance of getting a CEO job while still being president of Intel than being unemployed. She continues to hold the title of president of Intel with very little responsibilities, all the major businesses have been taken away from her.
I didn't recall any announcement from Google saying Marissa Mayer planned to leave Google in 6 months to pursue an external CEO role before she became the CEO of Yahoo. Usually one gets a new job first before leaving the old job. I believe she wanted to leave but had nothing better lined up. This was a good way for her to advertise herself to the industry that if any company is interested in hiring a CEO, she's available. I hear the Reddit CEO position is available.

Its possible that she was asked to leave because of the way the recent layoffs was handled. The HR department was under her, and the HR boss reported to her.
