Background Checks

As a sophomore petroleum engineering student wondering about future job opportunities, how are strict are criminal background checks for field engineers at Halliburton? I have an arrest record and a dismissed class A misdemeanor, no conviction, for a fight. Wondering if it's worth the $2k for me to get it expunged.

At this point just focus on getting your degree first. your case won't be that huge of an obstacle in my opinion. but good luck trying to get a job as a field engineer with how things are going. unless if you can pull an outstanding academic performance.

Don't know what State you're in. In Texas, HAL has to pay for each background check per County they check. So they usually check your County of residence. Or at least that's the way it was last time I was aware of the process. There may be a State or National database by now. I doubt it.

You should have no issues getting hired on at Halliburton. I know a guy who has drug convictions and he got hired. There is just a few extra things that he had to do for a while, but it's all good now. Outside of Halliburton, who knows. Just sell yourself on your resume and if you get interviewed, just be honest if asked. If not, shut up.

If you are white or on a visa then do not worry, otherwise you have no chance.

Just pay to get it expunged. The market is highly competitive and you are graduating in one of the largest PE classes . I wouldn't want to be in a situation where I get passed over for internships or jobs because of some BS I did sophomore year in college.

Typically felonies are weighed more heavily, but even then, it doesn't entirely disqualify you for consideration. Also, most companies screen 7 years back. With no conviction there probably is minimal risk in the hiring process.
