Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Qualcomm to drop Crapdragon?

Hearing rumors that the Q is going to dump the Crapdragon and focus exclusively on connectivity: modems, WiFi, Bluetooth, etc. Because the low end of the market is occupied by MTK and we occupy the high end, but all of the high end customers (CrApple, Samsuck, and Huawei) intend to use their own CPUs.

@ the nice thing.... The better body shops will replace the door panels and match the paint if they've been gouged; or use the factory spec paint and perform the right prep and undercoat layers after sanding. That's why they charge so much, and why your car is in the shop sometimes for weeks. But Sr. Dir. Cayenne probably took it to Maaco.

No way the "Quexit" happens from the apps processor market. This isn't TI we are talking about!

It will never be the same as the factory paint. And it will never be able to be sold as a Porsche approved CPO, since the dollar amount of the repair will easily exceed the CPO limit for qualifying for CPO. Instant massive depreciation hit.

"APSS head also kicked out recently..." how do you know he/she didn't just retire or move to another company? @gtfo keeps saying the best and brightest are leaving, because they have so many opportunities. And @hr keeps saying all is well.

Snapdragon 820 will lead Qualcomm back to dominance and Merry Christmas to all this December.

Q is in rapidly changing industry which is moving fast towards commoditization...past performance is not indication of future performance. Management miscalculated velocity of this commoditization( and value extraction from patents,R&D spends etc..) and caught off guard..

Short sighted QCT's rapid execution strategy is showing its result...I wont be surprised if AP business is curtailed significantly very soon...it was good while it lasted . APSS head also kicked out recently...

OEMs are lining up to sample Snap Dragon 820. This chip will dominate the mobile industry and bring Qualcomm back to dominance.

@110603: So, in effect, the 820 is the tech version of "Crapdragon: The Sequel"? We should have t-shirts made!

This isn't true. And it were it would be a really bad move because we would lose even more SOC platforms. Going head to head with Broadcom on connectivity alone we will always lose as we have been losing on tier 1 since they have a really good connectivity solution. And we can't go head to head with NXP since we have no solution on the NFC front. Broadcom does have NFC but do far it's taken a big step back against NXP and Samsung's own solution. The only prayer we have if we were to compete on connectivity alone would be is if avago totally f***s up the acquisition which they probably will. If avago however sells off broadcoms connectivity to nxp, we are in deep shit.

PIP or RIF...that's what they will do with those extra deckhands. Sinking ship doesn't need such a big crew anyways.

QC is not likely to dump 810 or the whole AP line. What is QC going to do with 5000 people that work on those products?

The lack of innovation is due to the program management office mandating that only known-profitable projects be worked on. As such, when fudging numbers, produt managers are only able to re-use what's known and already available (based on derivatives of current products). Hence there is no innovation and any blunder aka crapdragon 810, is a huge setback. This is truly how big companies go to die. Although, i do like that cheeky brit, chief PgM, sir malcolm spencer's accent. He will help run this company into the ground

well by that logic except modem all other things wifi/Bluetooth and connectivity are made by others too which have lower margins. The whole idea of Qualcomm was to "integrate" as much as possible.... the politics of QUALCOMM led to snapdragon 810 fiasco which moved Samsung out.... many players like htc/oppo (who don't make chips) benefit from an integrated solution..... 810 was a big disaster.... only modem is keeping alive that mediate is eating into the margins.....

Qualcomm doesn't have any growth area.... in the end there has to be value addition per dollar spend...and I think QUALCOMM is failing in the value addition because of so many groups working independently and against each other(many times).....

810 has so high power consumption..... power consumption is something which can be detected so easily....but still the designers allowed it and so did the marketing to go to customers. The time to market requirement lead to sub standard product out..... so quality is not driving QUALCOMM it is the market.....this philosophy doesn't work any more !!!!
