Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Does Paul Jacobs have Aspergers?

What made me initially suspect PJ is an autist was when watching the 2013 CES keynote. It was a complete trainwreck yet PJ seemed oblivious to it all. Now with the affairs, the layoffs, the grossly excessive compensation, and the kind of carefree attitude he exhibits towards it all, it's hard to believe he doesn't have something. I don't think it's an entitlement issue. I think he - although he tries to appear sincere - cannot empathize with other people.

Donate a money for a wing for the library or a new classroom building and you not only get a Ph.D. but your name on a really cool plaque. They may even name the building after you!

Just to clarify, I meant to say that you can be wealthy as hell, but that doesn't mean that a university is going to give you a PhD. BA/BS/MA/MS yes, PhD no.

It is not easy to get a PhD, especially from a school like UC Berkeley. Rarely does a legit university pull a stunt like LSE did and give Gaddafi's son a PhD.

PhD doesn't really mean high IQ, just means he jumped through hoops in the academic world. Titles are meaningless pieces of paper, I have absolutely no respect for any title.

PJ has a PhD in science so for most of the average Q people he comes across as a strange/retarded man. There is a REALLY big, big difference between 140 & 150+ IQ. I find it hard to socialize and relate to people in 120s and below. SM? 110 tops.

PJ’s biggest mistake was to promote S&M. If it was decided a year later, neither would PJ promote S&M, nor would S&M want the job.

He's entitled to that retention bonus! He stayed even though he could have left! Do you even know what it must be like living in Irwin's shadow?! Keep working to help the poor guy out with his meager bonus

My friend, who recently left QCOM has Asperger's. He's nothing like PJ. PJ is probably just a narcissist with entitlement issues. Having everything handed to him didn't help. A lot of kids who inherit their dad's empire, wealth, position, have a distorted sense of reality.

Those who lack empathy can fake it. Acting is the key skill for my job

Whether PC has Aspergers, QCOM’ers are screwed either way. If he did, then he really could not empathize with what employees are going through; if he did not, then he would be one cold guy not too show more emotion. Cut him some slack? No way.

I think that PJ is a silver spoon kind of guy who cannot relate to the lunch pale work a day crowd. In management meetings that he was in where I was present he did not seem engaged or have much of an executive presence. Maybe it was the subject matter (not QCT or QTL) but he never really seemed to want to understand the real issues or provide guidance or make a decision. It was always deferred. Not sure that it Aspergers is the cause. I have worked with Bill Gates before and he definitely was engaged and commanded a huge executive presence (at least in the earlier years). Sad to say but I do think that PJ does have a sense of entitlement. When you make that much money it is sometimes hard to relate to people that struggle to get bills paid and put their kids through school. Just my observations. I did not have a lot of interaction with him. As a person he seemed nice but as a business leader I found him lacking.

I'm not trying to be mean, one of my brothers has Aspergers so I'm familiar with their struggles. However, empathy and will to sacrifice are important qualities a leader must have and those with Aspergers struggle with both.

Please be kind-Aspergers sufferers are often very gentle, smart people . there are engineers at Qualcomm have Aspergers -they can't help it ,they were born that way. I know one and he sure would get rid of it if he could . It affects every aspect of his life......

A lot of people who were first in the computer industry in Silicon Valley had Aspeger's--or were somewhat AS. They were absolute geniuses when it came to thinking logically and programming computers, but were socially retarded. They also had very clear ideas about "the way things ought to be." (And they were usually right when it involved software or hardware.) When the MBAs starrted taking over management positions in major corporations, they tried to get rid of these people, because they didn't wear suits, kept weird hours, and just didn't have the right attitude. And that, in a nutshell, boys and girls, is why Jobs and Wozniak were kicked out of Apple for some dork in a suit who ran Pepsico (--at least until it became widely known that the dork from Pepsico didn't even know how to use his own computer), and why Sun Microsystems became irrelevant and was taken over by Oracle.
