Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

TMG is full of old fart fab workers and middle aged WASP male engineers who might as well be government employees.

I just moved into TMG - God help us. Intel-TMG prides itself on complex, inflexible dehumanizing bureaucracy. It's an iron cage of rule-based control and I don't even work inside the fab! I'm in a business group within TMG! There is no way we can stay competitive in high tech. I think I'm witnessing what will be the death of Intel.

A few years ago we hired 3 URM into the group as we had no choice BUT to hire URM. 3 years later here's how it worked out.

(1) URM1 - Technical Female (Indian) - VERY good employee, really knew her engineering, knew how to network, got things going and moving. Still with the company.

(2) URM2 - Technical Female (Indian) - Terrible employee, totally useless. Barely did any work, no visible demonstration that she knew her work. Said hours were too long, took medical leave and then a long vacation to "find herself". Eventually left the company.

(3) URM3 - Hispanic male - OK employee, really knew his engineering and how to network and get things done. Unfortunately falsified his credentials and submitted quite a few questionable expense claims which got back to finance/HR as his colleagues complained about the "cheating". He was let go. *** I guess the point is every one is different, URM Status shouldn't have a bearing on success but it is true that the lower bar for URM unfortunately means 2 of the 3 hires ended up being a bad fit or just ... unable to perform the job they were hired for. That, is a terrible "hit rate" when it comes to HR. HR should seriously rethink this policy if Intel is not only keeping the REAL underperformers, but trying to hire more of them for the sake of meeting some diversity goal.

135618, you may have a chance to be NBA player, if NBA and team owners believe player is just a labor, most people can do the job and playing skill is not as important for the games.

Hey Anonymous135105 - your Hispanic race was a major decision in your hiring even 8 yrs ago...it was fully in effect, but today it is front and center..because BK is pandering to the media...he wants to be important. BK cannot make it in the tech world as a CEO so he is going for the politically correct platform. Heck who knows..maybe he wants to be president of the USA someday.... In any case all the people that are URM have been given special treatment.

@135105: You are probably good, this craze wasn't rampant 8 years ago. Were you hired more recently you should feel insulted by recent events. Your glorious leader has publicly announced thar URMs has first priority for the company (just see today's news), laid off lots of folks to make space for URMs, departments can't hire until an URM has been interviewed/hired, hiring bonus now depends on color (an URM is worth twice that of everybody else), etc, etc. Were you hired recently then how would you know exactly why you were hired? Insulting indeed.

Hey Anonymous135105 - You WERE hired because you are HISPANIC get it - the color of your skin ..I am inside right now...and my manager said with strict confidence that he can ONLY hire a URM..PERIOD. Qualifications be dammed..this is right from HR - I hope all the URM sleep well knowing they were not qualified-

@135040: It's more likely than not that they have been hired for their ethnical background, so what do you think?

@135013: Mostly agree, except for last sentence. Now that the corporation has shown it's (lack) of regard for it's workforce I can't fault people putting the interests of the company at a very low priority. Personally I find that attitude disappointing, can only go downhill from there, but with management's and HR's willingness to commit crimes that's the unfortunate logical consequence.

@135010: I think you picked the wrong place moving to TMG. Given the size of the capital assets they run it should be no surprise they are very risk averse. There are groups that funds experimental projects, TMG isn't one of them. There are idiot managers everywhere, TMG no exception. Most groups don't care about when people come in, as long as work gets done. Funny you mention collaboration, it's a buzzword that is creeping in everywhere in the buzzword bingo from your dear leaders, TWWW is a major offender, and yet the entire company is designed and set up to produce silos (need to know basis, no-sharing due to R&R, basic incompetence) with no collaboration at all.

Risk taking is gone at Intel. Political Correctness rules the company. Managers are scared. URMs know they can never be fired and act that way. Shitty attitudes and entitlement. Jesse Jackson has Intel over his knees. Innovation is gone. Race to the bottom at full throttle. "Video killed the radio star" in full splendor. Intel exposed for race-oriented preferences and bounties to reward perverse behaviors in hiring. NCG's coming in as entitled little shits, not willing to put in the sweat equity required to win. "What's in it for me" over what can I do to make Intel great.

I'm the OP and yes! I'm talking about TMG US. If TMG is supposed to be the backbone of the company, we may be in deep shit. Some of the TMG leaders are dynamic; they say the right things and they can motivate people but the boots on the ground are unproductive, lazy and are paralyzed with bureaucratic inertia. One one hand, they (TMG old timers) waste huge amounts of money on garbage and on the other hand they play a very 'safe' game. They have no idea what risk taking is about - nor do they want to know. They don't collaborate and they get too caught up in stupid shit, like who comes in at 9:30am and who spends time on their phone - who uses social media (go back and read the posts in this thread, it's haliarious). WHO THE HELL CARES when someone comes in or where they work from. Freakin' get over it! The name of the game is PRODUCE or get the hell out of our way. Color, race and gender is inconsequential. What is important is innovation, risk taking and creative problem solving. We need thinkers who are not afraid of progress and dreamers who are not afraid to take action. They have no sense of adventure in the workplace. It's absolutely pathetic and its heart wrenching to witness.

Guys, Chinese economy present spiral downward will be another nail on this mismanaged delusional company.Intel derives 36% of its revenue from China. This jack ass BK ( accidental CEO), his HR and Legal organization ass kissers and ego manaics will be left with nothing but a stock options/RSU will be under water for long time. These ass kisser rats will be the first to jump this sinking Intel ship.

The Intel diversity thing is heavily skewed towards Indian females. There are even more female Indians than southeast Asian males. I wonder if Intel HR will look at this bias in hiring.

"Then there's the whole diversity thing, if there's such a thing as carrier grade stupidity then that fits the bill perfectly" - bingo. This is the best comment I've seen here in weeks. The single most divisive and absurd policy-making there could be. Even the old "rank and rate" focal process was more genuine that this initiative which is nothing more than pandering to the likes of Jesse Jackson and his scheme of shakedown economics. For all of those laid-off in recent weeks at Intel, the axe wielded by HR is the diversity axe. It IS a zero-sum game, despite what genius spin Ros Hudnall pumped out on Circuit back in the first quarter of this year. Just look at the "celebratory" news today:

http://www.bizjournals.com/portland/blog/techflash/2015/08/intel-43-of-new-employees-are-diverse-hires.html?ana=yahoo

http://www.siliconbeat.com/2015/08/12/intel-sees-boosts-women-and-african-americans-among-senior-leadership/

There is NO meritocracy in BK's regime... it's all politics and a capitulation to this administration's blather on the "benefits" of diversity. Way to go Intel, trading off content of character for how someone appears on the outside. This turns Intel in a shell of lies, like an empty fab with no equipment, no ramp, and a huge cost foot-print. It's all pretty on the outside, but hollow within.

Don't know CQN (you're probably right about them), TMG as a whole seems to be steady which is more than can be said of the other BUs. Agree on the corporate trainwreck, though keep in mind there's enough inertia to keep it running for a very long time. That said, nobody I know of have refused to learn new skills to match their job, even garbage management when that was a key EB factor recently (sad but true). Prove your point or it didn't happen.

What you seem to fail to understand is that there are things that require experience and expertise that may take a long time to master. Arrogance and stupidity in one neat package (thanks: Londo). Following populistic slogans about age and then blindly ignoring the fact that there are things that can't be done by cheap H1B RCGs in or pulled from social networking is not going to help the company at all. Then there's the whole diversity thing, if there's such a thing as carrier grade stupidity then that fits the bill perfectly.

If the company indeed is in trouble (apart from self-inflicted problems like McAfee, 7+ Bn wasted) then it's obvious it has no plan, and more pointless actions are to follow.

"...having to deal with people who actually know what they are doing and doing it right. The horror.." Yeah - You must be one of the old farts who has refused to learn new skills and should be shown the door. The only thing the organization is ‘doing right’ is creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion and demoralization. And they seem to be especially efficient at doing things that should not be done at all. The big irony here is that the one thing that they SHOULD do well (support the fab) is being done poorly. It’s crazy. The organization (outside of the fab) is a train wreck. Their bias towards bloat has led them to believe that they are THE answer to Intel quality. They have way too many people with nothing to do so they over-complicate EVERYTHING! Waste does not come tied up in neat packages. It is marbled throughout our company in organizations like CQN. It is embedded in the way we’re doing business. Corporate Quality Network is divorced from reality, subjective, one-sided, truculent and inept at making business processes simple. The intelligence indicator of a good business unit is when they can is make hard problems easy, and a genius business unit will make problems go away. The only thing CQN knows how to do is to change their measuring stick if the measurements don't come out in their favor. The organization prides itself on growth even though the growth has been accompanied by a decrease in its rate of efficiency.

I agree, TMG needs more RCG's to walk around with their stupid phones in their hands, post pictures on Instagram, snapchat, tweet all day long and make new friends on Facebook. Take vacation after vacation, call in sick and go home at 2:30 in the afternoon.

I feel your pain, having to deal with people who actually know what they are doing and doing it right. The horror...

You should have moved to SSG or McAfee, people there may be more your type and I can assure you there are very few there who have any idea..

Agree with the bureaucracy and secrecy paranoia though. Results in a bunch of silos, often doing the same thing. Efficiency isn't a priority it appears.
