For those in IT facing the possibility of layoffs, be very afraid.

Not to add fuel to the fire, but I don't work for DVN or CHK or any energy company. In 2013 I was laid off from a very profitable company in OKC, with 15 years of Dev/QA/Project Management experience. I spent the next 5 months with no leads on short-term contracts, no leads on full time perm positions despite putting out my resume to about 5 agencies. Why? Because in truth, the OKC job market for IT is DRY. With oil and gas out of the picture of possibilities, there are a very select few companies with openings that are full-time and not SAP-centric.

My advice? Save every penny of your severance if an when you do get it, ramp up your savings for 6 months on top of that, and be prepared to borrow/cash out 401K etc in preparation to move out of state asap. Look at the DFW, Austin, Raleigh/Durham markets for the best options.

Way too many IT people still at CHK. And the smart ones are few and far between - they are clueless.

Your $.02 sucks!! You couldn't find any work with agencies because you likely burned bridges here in OKC. There were plenty of jobs available - I work for a company that hired a LOT of laid off CHK IT people. Some of them were horrible and others were outstanding but one thing is certain, we didn't hire the bad people from CHK IT. How do you know the bad people? You just have to ask - their reputations are quite well known. So if you couldn't find a job in OKC IT, it's your own damned fault.

Actually I have friends at CHK so I'm tracking info about if layoffs are happening.

No affiliation with the industry but just cruising O&G layoff blogs for shits and giggles. I can't imagine why you were unemployed for so long.
