Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Manager-Employee Ratio at QC

QC has more managers per employee than most orgs -- directors, snr directors, vps, senior vps, principal x engineering/product management/business. Qualcomm has a rectangular hierarchy than a pyramid. There are about 12000 engineer, snr engineer, staff engineers who do almost 95 % of the work. Majority of the remaining are slave beaters. There are talented individual contributor senior positions though who keep the company afloat by working with the engineers and sponsor the lifestyle of the semi retired multi millionaire slave owners.

Conniving Indians must be removed from managerial positions. They certainly do not belong in the interview/hiring process. Otherwise, QC will continue to have the same poor quality of personnel that led to its downfall.

Good quality people certainly have left. Only buddies stay back and rebuild another buddy structure. It will take a while for Q to return to quality hiring.

THE LIST IS UPDATE. ABOUT 99.9% ENGINEERS WILL BE LAID OFF. HR IS CALLING PEOPLE TO THE OFFICE RIGHT NOW... YOUR NAME NEXT?

A. Coward - Your statement is pretty naive and biased. There are many smart and really good engineers that work at Q and can get a job anywhere. You may run into a few bad eggs but who doesnt? You can apply this to Google, Apple, etc. Just because they are doing good doesn't mean they have a bunch of less than adequate engineers that made it in because they know someone or cause they answered an interview question the right way.

Manger role is bogus role in QCOM, distributed as award for loyalty..

Why one should call QCT mangers as real manager?... they have no accountability and they mostly do administrative review work.At least thats what my experience with 3 managers in last 8 years. They all seemed to be just a messengers, not someone you can look up to..

"..when they lay you off 20 years later, you'll still be programming Perl and the rest of the world has left you behind" Amen to that. QC is so backwards compared to other places out there, but they live in heir own little bubble, unaware of the rest of the world. That bubble is about to burst and they are going to find out the hard way that everyone has moved on and left them behind.

QC’s way of recruiting and retaining people is to promote someone to manager rank. It really got out of control. QC is really screwed if they don’t let go the managers and directors, because as soon as engineers are let go, they are completely crippled.

The stack of managers, managing me, taking credit for progress is staggering. A VP at Qualcomm is equivalent to a line manager at a traditional company. An EVP, would merely be a director at any other company. The only qualification for EVP is 20 years at Qualcomm. What most managers at Qualcomm fail to realize is that they are not qualified to move in the equivalent position at any other company.

My wife's company typically passes on job candidates from Qualcomm. They lack well rounded-ness and maturity. If you start work at Qualcomm out of college, and they put you to work programming Perl, when they lay you off 20 years later, you'll still be programming Perl and the rest of the world has left you behind.

QC's senior executives have done a terrible job managing company and growth. The board of directors saw fit to reward them with very high retention bonuses. I find this unethical. The board of directors should be all fired for approving these bonuses. If those executives had any decency, they would return their bonuses.

I do not expect much from a company which is run by these people.

Every dick and Harry is a VP in the company. Companies such as Apple, Samsung etc it takes years of handwork to become a VP not some 10-15 years in one company.

Maybe corruption scheme revolves around it so chances are layoff may not change that. Other posts suggest managers, directors will keep their position; hope I'm wrong here.

i think this data point of 12000 workers is the key thing..... and rest are managers.... and this is the root cause of all the problems in QC... ... it is blatant corruption which has generated a mess in the company.... QC is extremely top heavy company.... and the layoffs should if done properly will make is pyramid as it should be..... else the company is going to have a very painful future
