Here in San Diego, my doctor friends live in La Jolla.

It's easy to find a sub 1.5 mil house in SV, may not be the ideal location or size but the school district will be good. On a median 375K California Physician salary you'd be able twice that amount. Just saying. Needles to say that folks in a bit more lucrative branches of medicine can throw in a Bentley or two into this mix.
You have shitty doctor friends. The good doctors can afford Woodside.
Not worth moving to Silly Valley. They don't pay enough to justify the living expense
Almost all of my engineering friends have a house in Silicon Valley they bought years ago.
YOunger engineers have condos or townhouses. Most doctors own a house too unless they
just graduated.
Doesn't matter about doctors. There are 30 times more job openings in Silicon Valley than in San Diego.
Probably 10 times more jobs in Austin than San Diego. If you get laid off and can't get a job, you move. End of story.
In Silly Valley, I could sell my junk home in Santa Clara, and do a 1031 exchange to a very nice home in Newport Beach with almost nothing out of pocket.
In Silly Valley, my engineering friends that didn't win the stock option jackpot are still trying to save enough money to buy a 2/2 condo in Santa Clara after about 15 years of working. In San Diego, some of my friends are working on their 8th or 9th investment property after working for 15 years.
