Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

What you can do

For all of you interviewing with companies in SV tell them you want to stay in SD. The more of you do this it may be more likely some will create small teams here that can grow with time.

@129903: Yes, I do see that many people in QC will try to make it work in SD. Taking lower pay to stay in SD might just be the norm. After the opportunities are exhausted, some will have to consider relocating. It is a simple rule of supply and demand. Usually after 3 months of looking, people are more open to other options. It would be great to have ex-QC guys start something here, but VC funding for IC is dead.

129842: On the other hand, there are a lot of people who would work for less in order to stay here. And I hear there will be a couple of buildings availabe in the QCOM complex in Sorrento Valley!

One thing to keep in mind is that your bargaining position is not as good as you think. Take Intel for example, the biggest IC company in the world does not produce the best IC designers in the world. In fact, it is the opposite, some of the worse. QC IC designers focus too narrowly and might not be a good fit for some SV IC companies. So, if you start making demands, you might just lose out to those that are willing to make the move.

Yep, tell them you will work in SD for $120K instead of $200K base in SV. You are better off in SV with the extra $80K and driving to Hayward or Fremont, CA or Oakland for a cheap house.

Work in irvine. Or best, form a startup down here and have them buy you out.
