Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

You can get $250K to $400K with overtime as a consulting engineer (if you consult instead of temping) in Silicon Valley. Say $300K average with

a little overtime. Husband / wife both consulting in Silicon valley = $600K. Can't do that in San Diego. $1.8M house looks cheap for a couple making $600K a year.

That's 3 years * $600K = $1.8M. With taxes , etc it takes 6 years to pay it off. That is why houses cost $1.8M in SV and $700K in SD. Wife usually can't find good paying work in SD.

Anonymous129844,

Uh, nice try.. Mmm. no..., Most companies that hire in bay area are startups 3rd round of VC funding or earlier. They have no money to pay a 5 year engineer $200k. That leaves you with the major employers (apple, google, facebook, linkedin, etc). None of them pay $200k base salary for a 5 year experience person. Speaking from experience as talking with other colleagues that work there. So, again, quit being a liar.

You need to watch out for rival sellers, and your property might get confiscated by Feds.

@A129785, second that. Forget about contracting. Most QC engineers will not survive contracting. You first need to get established for referral work. Contracts come through referral mostly. You have to maintain you own health care, Social Security, and whatever expense. That is the reason why employer’s total cost is double that of the base salary. QC has been more than generous. It is time to take what you can get. SV is where most of you will find jobs. Forget about SD.

I heard the same. I also heard that, in Silicon Valley, money grows on trees and streets are paved with gold. It's always sunny, all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average.

Have you done contract work before? It sure does not sound like you have. It's a dog eats dog world out there man, To get a 250K in consulting you'd have to do miracles, you may as well forget 400K right now on the spot. The first blip in budgets, you are gone in like no time. You'd have to fight for every penny of that money.

You can't expect the consulting work to be that stable. The houses in Silicon Valley cost so much because you have dual earners who are both employed at tech firms with good stock compensation. Typical household income (salary, bonuses, and RSUs for two people combined) is $400K/yr, so the houses at current prices are still reasonable
